Northern Hemi Season Trip Report thingy - Sälen, Sweden

How do you “not notice” $50 notes that you put in a piggy bank?

I have never got people who have even gold coins in a piggy bank!

probably the same way people don’t notice putting money in pokies?

The pineapples and 20s are mostly from things we’ve sold in the last few weeks and months. I try and empty the coins from my wallet into the pig regularly, cos I know if I don’t, it’ll just get spent on something that isn’t important. Plus I hate carrying around coins anyway. I only ever take out of the pig if the red shield appeal or similar comes to the door grin

So I’ll be the spoil sport and say you would have had even more money if you’d banked it earlier and had been earning interest on it rather than letting it sit in the pig?  tongue wink

P.S looking forward to the travel diary!

hehe! Yep DRC i agree with you!

Much prefer to have a strict budget and no loose change lying around and savings into a high interest acct!

I don’t throw away money on pokies and the money I “played” with on cup day was less than I would have spent on lunch (which we got given at work)

Cords not raining on your parade but I just don’t get it (have said it on here numerous times!) but if as you say you were putting the money for things you sold I do get it more than loose change!

lol I don’t consider it rained on….you very smartly can have your budget when you earn money regularly. I don’t - not even close, so I can’t. The money has been gradually accumulating in the pig for the last year or so, and easily $500 of it has come in the form of sales of some of our stuff in the last 4-6 weeks.

All the high interest accounts require you to deposit relatively large amounts of money regularly (we have one of those with RAMS, too)...the dribs and drabs that this amount has arrived in would make very negligible amounts of interest, if any. None of the money ‘lies around’. It all goes into the pig! Loose change that other people would spend on stuff, just cos they have it in their wallet, I remove from my wallet and save instead.

Plus, as I say, i like the idea of chucking coins in the pig (and the odd note) and when its full I have all this money that I didn’t even notice I was saving.

Now that I’ve banked it, it is straight into one of those accounts to earn me interest as a whole sum

Funny - see if I had $50 at the end of a week I would drawn $50 less out of my weekly allowance for the next week and transfer that $50 into my ING acct!

Even though I am not frivolous with my money I do get where you are coming from as we were the poorer family in my street growing up but yet went or more overseas holidays than our neighbours! Santa significantly gave us less (my poor parents having to explain that one to us!)

My mum used to say that to them when they asked how our family afforded it and mum used to say “see that case of beer you drink several times a week and those smokes you smoke?” stop doing that and you to will take you family on a holiday!

PHOTOS FROM LAST SEASON

Today it is 11 days until we leave.

It is getting exciting but I am NOT looking forward to moving all our stuff for what I figured out is the 15th time in 14 years. We’re booking a thrifty truck for next tuesday - the 3 tonne moving trucks that you can drive with a car license - only $80 for 24hrs with an NRMA member discount - not bad!

Thought I would upload some photos from our last swedish season in åre.

Early season hike up the Goat’s Back mountain in a nearby national park. Fred took this & I’m the black dot lagging behind! Rad place though and we saw heaps of wild reindeer. Not enough snow for a decent ride down though!

My first ever crack at learning to wall-ride. Some of Fred’s friends had a generator on skis and light for night riding. Great fun!

Hiking up our favourite chute for some pow. Not very fit, needed a rest!

About 50m behind our house, walking on water (albeit frozen)

That same river in the spring

Trots race once a year on the frozen lake

It draws quite a crowd. I just went cos it was weird and exotic!

Fun building a jump one day. The fact that I actually caught him in the middle of the frame is some kind of miracle!

Trying to learn to boardslide one day.

This photo was taken in January. There are NEVER nice days like this in January!

I had a job in a supermarket for a few months refilling these bad boys! 96 different kinds of lolly, I think! I promised myself I wouldn’t eat any until my last day there & I managed to keep that promise. I lost 10kg that winter, actually! Hoping for similar results this winter, seeing as I’ve put nearly all of it back on in the last 3.5yrs! ?

Ice fishing on the lake.

Having fun in the red line of jumps
