Guys I’m almost set for the upcoming season over here just wanted some input on some durable snowboarding clothing, I currently wear Burton and have been for the last few seasons, its holding up well just looking for something a little warmer any suggestions on some companies that make some tough snowboarding gear?
few that i checked out:
686
Special Blend
Sessions
Billabong
Dakine
O’Neill
Volcom
Foursquare
I cant recommend 3CS enough for great quality/durability
I cant recommend 3CS enough for great quality/durability
Just checked out the site looking good but sadly dealers in the US are hard to find.
if you’re happy with Burton but just want something a little warmer, why not get a warmer jacket from Burton? They have all sorts of jackets from puffys to shells with minimal insulation
Bonfire makes really good outerwear.
Ive worn volcom for the past 2-3 winters, jacket is slightly insulated and is considerably warmer than my 32 shell. Has worn really well and taken plenty of branches etc without any rips or tears despite some heavy bruising on my side haha. Otherwise I bought some analog pants last season which have also worn really well, have a bit of a fabric feel on the outside which I’m guessing is a bit tougher than your usual pants which have that glossy sort of look if that makes sense.
Either way would recommend either brand as being very durable.
I’m happy with my 3CS gear too!!!!!
And 686, while a little more pricey, is quality gear!!!!!
+1 for Volcom. Never owned a jacket but I know many who do and their gear is pretty solid. DC also make some solid outerwear these days, as do Bonfire.
I quite like Special Blend gear but it really doesn’t hold up as well as others, neither does Foursquare.
I recently picked up some Special Blend pants and jacket it’s was on a crazy sale figured I’d test them out.. 686 has a good amount of stuff but you ain’t kidding on the price… I don’t mind spending the money if it will last me a good amout of seasons and can take a beating in the backcountry that’s why I’m asking around about the brands so when i do lay down to 600-700$ on a jacket and pants its with be worth it. Companies like Dakine and Quiksilver are really pricey I’m just wondering what’s all the fuss about other then the big names behind them like T Rice. And O’neil that Jones promoted samething…. And then there is Padagonia, North Face, Oakley who just sell the name it seems like not to say they don’t make sick clothing but 600$ for a jacket it better do something for me other then just keep me warm.
Quiksilver is pricey, you might be looking at the goretex line? Their other stuff are regularly priced.
patagonia/northface type brands your paying for the tech…would not classify Oakley in the same scope
whether or not the tech works or not
thats a different story
From memory my Volcom Gore-Tex jacket set me back around ~$400CAD to give you an idea - lasted 2 seasons and only washed/re-waterproofed once in that time. If you’re going to be riding every day then your gear will be pretty thrashed by the end of a season. In my eyes $600-700 should pay for both Jacket and Pants.
With Patagonia and Northface, you’re definitely paying for the name, but in a sense that you’re paying for the reliability of that name. Both make super solid gear that will keep you dry and last a long time.
The way I go with gear is I buy 1 pair of cheap pants (usually 5k waterproof) as some park/bluebird day pants, as these wear out the fastest and need replacing more often, then get some more waterproof pants for snowing/unsure days, and a durable and waterproof jacket. Although to be fair I haven’t actually had to buy anything myself since 2009.
do Tap Out make snow clothes?? if not maybe if you waterproofed up some of their stuff, you’d have some ‘tough’ snow gear!!
OR maybe just listen to the sensible responses other peeps have posted on here.
When I was looking into my outerwear (ended up with burton goretex shell) the brand arc’teryx came up a lot as super high quality/tech but pricey gear.
If you’re already happy with your current gear but just want to be a little warmer, would it be better to spend your money on some good quality base/mid layers which will give you a whole lot more flexibility for temp management?
What DRC said ^^^^
I always go with a shell and layers, much better temperature control.
I have had Volcom and 3CS gear as my daily wear for the best part of the last 10 years with a fair bit of Burton gear to boot.
I have not had any problems with quality* with any outer ware. I find the Burton gear is more fashion oriented and looks great, but is a touch lacking in the functionality compared to the 3CS and Volcom gear. (pocket placement etc etc) I have had Quicky, four square and a ski co. brand stuff as well. If the weather is shit, I always use my 3CS or Volcom.
*new 3CS pants this season are awesome, BUT…... on my right leg, the magnet that holds the pocket shut has worn through. I am buggered if I can figure out what I do to cause this to happen. Will put some trusty old Sikaflex sealant over the fraying edges before next season and we’ll be good to go for a few more years
