A had a quick search for this on my phone, didn’t come up with the goods so I’ll ask anyway.
Has anyone on here converted an old, retired snowboard into a dune board?
I was thinking off just screwing some sandals in the place of bindings.
Would prob work fine I imagine. I’d dull the edges right off, that way they are just a bit safer for grabs
Am I able to dull the edges at home? And with no idea
my friends and I tried this. It kinda worked but you have to wax the board up before each run, otherwise it just sticks. Plus you cant (well we couldnt) carve the sand like snow. It was pretty much a point the nose down and striaght line it kind of deal. We had big plans to try out all sorts of other lubricants to see what worked best, but like alot of things we did as youths, we lost interest pretty quick. Slick bottom bodyboards fang down dunes though.
Was planning using it to progress some aspects of my snowboarding over the summer. If I have any success with it, il post on here.
Fingers crossed it works.
Yeh just use a file and round it right off. Thats if the board is never being used for snow again.
We used go to heaps.
I just use an old board, don’t worry about doing anything to it. We used silicon spray for lube.
Lucky enough to have steep dunes, so we could get turns in no problems
Those two middle pics look sick mate!
Yeh silican lube makes sence seeing sand is silican in structure
Azz, this is exactly what I was planning. We have some big dunes near me too. How often did you reapply the silicon spray? And do you just get it from the hardware shop?
What are you using for bindings?
oooh after seeing azz’s successful turns, i might have to give this another go. Where are those dunes? east vic somewhere?? Theyre are massive ones down near where i used to live in west vic aswell.
I wanna go sandboarding now!!!!!
Re apply each run.
Yes you can just buy a spray can at the hardware $15 - $20 each I think.
Snowboard bindings and boots.
The bottom pic is one of our first attempts, we made our own boards to start with and broke them quickly. Then we made another with steel inside to strengthen, then, we would do a hard turn and the steel would bend and not re straighten. These were ply boards with fibre glass bases. Webbing straps to hold you on.
By this stage I was onto my third snowboard and had an “old” board laying around, so we put the straps on it and gave it a whirl, worked fine and after a day of riding the base looked great, saved paying for a base grind
Then we ended up with someone else’s (who we didn’t like much) board and bindings, so we used that until we had to give it back. Then just started using whatever board and bindings.
I wouldn’t use my new T. Rice, but would certainly use my Skate Banana I have had for a few years with the bindings I use at the snow regularly.
You would have to a heap of sliding to damage a board on sand, after all ice is pretty abrasive stuff like sand is.

Yeah Trent, a couple hours east of here, near Pt Hicks. Gotta hike in and out of the place first.
The shot where I am jumping is near Marlo and easy access from the Conran road. There are plenty of fun dunes along there, but the big ones are all further east
Thanks for the help Azz, you’re a champ.
I might try and get my hands on some wakeboard strap bindings
Wouldn’t wanna come off and eat shit hahaha
