Light Field Cameras

Avatar

Lytro Light field cameras were launched this week. What do you think? Are they going to be the “next big thing?” Certainly the dude who developed them seems a switched on kinda guy.

They do look pretty cool, but my first impression is of a bit of a one trick pony.

I guess it would make a pretty cool toy, but a little bit too expensive for me.

They are the bees knees.
Endless depth of field and the ultimate camera of photoshop junkies.

Takes 90% of the skill away from using a camera and puts creating the image in post production.

I want one! Such wide possibilities of what can be achieved.

They do seem to be a pretty good camera. Having an f/2 lens on such a small camera is crazy. The drawbacks I see are that they cannot film, are not yet waterproof and the internal flash drive and internal battery cannot be replace by changing SD card/second battery. I’m also interested to see how well the Light field picture file (.lfp) integrates with programs such as photoshop and lightroom.

Played with them earlier this year in the USA. Innovative but as a first gen model doesn’t live up to the hype. Didn’t like the picture quality at all and not fun or engaging to use.

Did you get to play with the image on a computer?

I think I read that they are going to get an upgrade to allow them to take 3D photos.

They look like a bit of a gimmick to me.  It would be amazing to see the technology in a full frame camera that was actually good for taking photos.  Seems to be a camera for updating your facebook and instagram.  More a toy with fancy features than a useful camera.
Just my opinion though.

The most useful cameras in history were more toys. But I defs hear what your saying. Not a real piece of kit!... Yet.
