Kelly Slater Wave Company - Man-made Surf Park

Avatar

Kelly Slater has been working on creating a world-class surf park, using an artificial wave in a donut-shaped pool.

Apparently it will be opening in 2014 but we still can’t confirm this. Images and video below.

What are your thoughts?

Looks sweet!

Would love to see how it would actually operate though. I can picture the wave running from one side to the other, but wouldn’t it close out after that? Or would it change direction, turning from a right hander the a left hander?

It looks sick if it’s everything it’s cracked up to be, I wonder how the hell you get on and off it though and falling and copping a never ending set on the head wouldn’t be too much fun.  Having said that I would be lining up to have a go on it!

Pretty sure I’ve read about this before and he’s been in patent wars with someone else over the technology for this.

This is Greg Webber’s similar design, the bit I like is the river waves at the end, just imagining those being 4-6ft is amazing, pity about the kook bodyboarder who couldn’t manage to stay on the wave, he would got mindlessly barrelled if he could.

That kind of rings a bell with me also, cords.

Hopefully it gets up. Kind of reminds me of the proposed Ski World Sydney though. Remember that indoor ski dome a few years back?

Yea, these things look awesome and rarely happen.

I would love to learn to surf on something like this. I’m not the strongest ocean swimmer and it’s not exactly easy to hire a learners board. My board is more for someone who already knows how to ride…

With the backing of a guy like Slater, I reckon it may have a very good chance of gettin off the ground!!!!! prob take years still????? Especially in this economic climate!!!!!

And to answer your question Tills, I reckon it’s gonna operate similar to a FLOWRIDER in such that the breaking section stays at the same point just that it keeps hugging the center of the “doughnut” as it moves around!!!!!

And that’s how it’ll be easy to paddle into it also I reckon, nthn????? You’ll be able to paddle in from the face, and if ya miss it, ya will just have to wait till your wave comes back around again!!!!!

I heard you end up on an artificial beach at the end of it (no joke).
