Thanks guys,

Had a look on google and found the relevant APN settings that you need to slot into the iPhone, seems simply enough. Going to invest in a sim cutter off eBay though as I can see that going poorly if I try it myself with scissors.  Hopefully see you guys on the mountain in Dec.

Hey,

For banks I would recommend waiting until your in whistler to get them! Much easier to have your local branch in town..

Info on whistler banks here http://www.rideonwhistler.com/Whistler_Season_Guide/Banking_in_Whistler/

If you get a phone in vancouver make sure they give you a whistler number. Cell numbers in canada have a local area code! Everyone will hate calling you if you have a vancouver number also looks odd on your resume!

Great, thanks rideonwhistler. Helpful as always!

So stoked for this season!

Has anyone used/using Rogers as their phone service provider? Whats the go? Plan or prepaid?

Haven’t been with rogers before but generally from what I’ve heard off others is that prepaid isn’t great as once you’re out of credit you can’t receive calls. I’ve always been on a month to month plan in the past which has suited me. Most recent season I was using Virgin which seemed pretty decent price wise in comparison to other providers I’ve used in the past. Unlimited text both local and international was a bit of a bonus.

Hmm not really sure if I can justify getting a plan for a season? They don’t have contracts right?

Then again, don’t want to not be able to call/be called because I had too many PBR’s the night before and decided to drunk dial everyone I know.

You don’t need to sign up to a 12/24 month contract - you just sign up on a month to month one that you can cancel at any point (generally just call up and give a months notice before you want it cut off). I know Virgin and Solo both do this as I’ve used both in the past and have options for cheap phones to use on these plans aswell if you’re Australian phone doesn’t work for whatever reason.

awesome! sounds pretty convenient.

probably sort that out in Vancouver before I head up to Whistler

Yeah there’s a virgin store in vancouver that I went to last time, just tell them that you want a whistler number and they’ll sort it all out on the spot for you. Just check that the sim works in your phone firstly as it didn’t work in my australian phone so I ended up getting a new phone later on in squamish instead.

Thats another option. If you’re driving up to Whistler from Vancouver you can stop off there on the way up and get it all done there along with a big wal mart shop to buy a whole lot of essentials. Driving up is actually pretty affordable with a one way rental through a company like avis compared to the bus if you can split the cost with one other person.

Yeah,

Pay as you go is fine if you just want to text and dont care about calling.. But if you want to use your phone for data and calls a monthly plan is the only economical way to go in canada..

I know booking a car through avis.co.uk is cheaper than booking through canada by a good amount (something to do with currency exchange and insurance I think).. Does anyone know if this is the same for http://www.avis.com.au/  ??

Can’t comment on that, marc had a corporate discount code that we used whenever we wanted to book a rental through avis that saved us a lot off the standard price. I’ll probably look into it this time around to drive myself up the mountain as compared to getting the bus. The stop off at wal mart on the way up is the key thing as I can stock up on stuff for the season.

hmm yeah just checked out virgin mobile canada and they have pretty awesome phone plans. might have a look at rogers to compare

Does anyone know if there is a bus service to squamish from Whistler? Or people frequently doing like a rideshare type deal, I figure i might need to head down that way every now again, I’ve heard its cheaper to buy groceries in Squamish if you can.

yes and no.. If you’re spending big then it becomes a viable option but when you’re only spending between $50-100 I’ve found that I was better off just buying locally as you’re not paying for gas money etc. When you’ve got 4-5 people splitting the gas money and someone has a car then it can be a cheaper option, but you’re looking at a 3-4 hour trip all up. Just under 2 hours of drive time plus everyone getting all their own stuff from save on food and wal mart etc. Some mates would do it once a fortnight on payday and buy everything for the following 2 weeks, but that only worked because one of them had a car.
