Bought a SUP

A mate of mine as recently got into SUPing (Stand Up Paddleboarding) and has been into me to have a crack, had a go once a long time ago down in Vic at Point Addis on a board that was too small for me so it wasn’t all that fun.  My mate has a couple and I had a go on his soft board 9’6” in Pittwater, was to small for me but i started to appeal to me as a way to get fit.

Went down in Saturday to a SUP demo place at Narrabeen Lake and had a crack on a 12’6” race board.  All went well for the first half till I busted the paddle ha ha.

Was a wooden shaft and my technique probably isn’t that flash so might have had something to do with it and not just brute strength unfortunately.  Even after doing that we ended up doing a bit over 5kms in a little under 50mins according to my mates gps fitness app.  It was actually good fun and a good workout that’s far more enjyable than running.  So much so I ended picking up a secondhand 12’6” carbon race board and a new carbon paddle.  Took it out on Pittwater again today, upwind against the southerly was a total prick but downwind you really get some speed up.  Going to try and do between 30-60 mins every day this week and possibly ave a go at an ocean race at some point in the future.

Anyone else got oneand domuch paddling?  I don’t really have any desire to use it in the surf unless it’s tiny, I would rather just surf my normal board if it’s any good.

Nice one mate. Haha good work snapping the paddle. Never tried SUP but I’d be keen to give it a go. Is it super stable?

I wouldn’t say super stable mate, in flat water it’s ok but throw in some boat wake or a stiff breeze and it’s gets fairly interesting at times.  I have been using the Endomondo GPS app to track my paddles which has been interesting comparing times and average speeds etc.  Planning on a 7km downwinder this weekend which should be fun.  Feels really good for fitness, getting better every paddle so far, seems to be helpingmy back out a lot as far as strength in it directly and core and stabiliser muscles are getting a lot stronger as well.
