MacBookPro users (mid2010 & 2011 models)

Avatar

LION & MOUTIAN LION OSX
Last Saturday I installed OSX7 (Lion) and it would shut down every few minutes or less.

History
Earlier this year my MacBookPro started playing up by randomly shut down. I thought it had picked up a bug or malware and thought the upgrade would fix it
EVERY 6-12MONTHS I WIPE THE HD AND REINSATLL to keep performance at max (done this since owning Mac - 15years).

Sunday was extremely frustrating trying to work out the issue after Lion upgrade.
I kept recalling Tj’s mention of faulty graphics cards and overheating issues on Mac’s. I had never had graphic card or heat issues or come across examples of Tj’s claim but after some research found plenty - all on MacBookPro 15”/17” mid2010 & 2011 models.

Did various sotware fix attempts including a apple software fix for this problem/model. But the problem became progressively worse.
Went back to Snow Leopard (external startup disc) but problem continued.

Seems (after much digging) Apple will extend the warranty on effected models for these parts (they apparently even did a recall at one time). My machine is currently at a service repair center undergoing testing.
I’m certain it’s the graphic card (though have heard of motherboards also being replaced). Apple will do it free of charge.

WARNING to owners of MacBookPro 6,2 DON’T UPGRADE TO LION. It causes the graphic card to have this issue.
If your system is going ok don’t tempt it or if you have even a small issue take it to a Apple service tech and back up everything NOW!!

Failing repair under warranty I’ll either replace the graphic card or look into upgrading the computer.

And all this as I’m settling into rebuilding my life, catching up on tax and video jobs. At least it didn’t happen at a busy time when I was mid video editing.

Don’t worry, I blew up my HDD on my MBP two weeks ago on an update. Full Read/Write error. Mid edit. so brutal haha. Like Lanox, picked myself up a full speed Retina model. it was time for an upgrade anyways, this thing is flyiiiiiinnnggggg

FMF how good is the screen lol ... so clear..

Wonder if it’ll affect my 13” mid 2010… in saying that, i wasn’t planning on installing Lion, although the icloud idea sounds nice especially if i get an ipad.

Yeah, Its sensational! I didn’t buy it for that reason, in fact I wasn’t that keen on it because I would rather save that extra power for running AE quicker, but I am impressed. Taking ages for some software to catch up, pixellated interfaces are the worst!

I did come across the odd 13” mention but don’t think it will be effected as it has different hardware to 15”

Lion is different to leopard. I didn’t get to explore to much in my 2min blocks before each shutdown. Will take getting used too - I did it mainly for iCloud sync with my phone (and hope to fix issue). I’ll be devo if upgrade to new machine because paid for Lion.

Spoke with RentSmart this arvo and it turns out I’m insured through them and have indefinite upgrade option. smile

Heat issue can be fixed by downloading fancontrol software. I went from running at 80/90degrees to 65.
I’m sure I read that the heat issue was also extended but using the software will fix the issue.

My first thought was the shutdown was caused by overheating. I guess it’s likely overheating harmed other components - at one point it spiked at 105!!!

I use an external display at home so retina display doesn’t interest me. Concerned about new MacBook not having FireWire - do you use an adapter through thunderbolt? I have several external drives with FireWire.

Fmf, did you have SSD? Love SSD - not a fan of mechanical drives in portable device, had may fail over the years.

Aren’t all new MacBooks SSD - noticed on apple site they say flash storage, I assume that they call SSD flash now.

Yeah mine is SSD, much safer I agree, mechanical failure was my downfall in two HDD this year!

I believe the lowest model MBP might have a spin drive still? I can’t remember I didn’t look hard, went straight for the 2.7ghz upgrade which has SSD Stock option.
The only concern you might have with them now is they are virtually non-upgradable post purchase. RAM is soldered onto the board. But 16gb will get me by for a while I think. And you’ll enjoy that Retina if you end up needing to edit images away from the home station!

My eyesight is starting to be compromised and I never travel with my glasses but I’m sure it will impress clients.
MacBookPro 13” is mechanical HD.

Update: Apple came to the party and agreed to replace the logic board even out of warranty. Then today another technician phoned and wouldn’t go ahead with the repair!
This is through a third party repair center (not apple). Apple rang them when they didn’t order the part (once apple give you a case number they really look after you).

Tech couldn’t replicate problem and its taken them a week and a half and all they’ve done is remove 2 programs.
They are going to “stress test” it tonight and Ill be on their doorstep first thing tomorrow to pick it up.

I’ll pretty much sort the paper work out straight away (when I have my computer and can print) to upgrade through RentSmart.

Still no love: turns out I only had 5 days to get paperwork in, they gave me another 5 when I explained I couldn’t print without computer.
Apple: are still being awesome, the snr tech specialist spent 1hr on the phone and we made some headway. They also spoke again 3 times to the techs that did nothing.
