It took Wildman and my cousin (I may of helped a touch ) approximately five minutes to tether their netbooks to phones and by pass the schools controls.
The technology moves faster than the education department
I agree with you fully, but it just does not work that way. I have no clue how they can overcome it.
Heading further off topic, we are appalled by the lack of computer skills our kids and their teachers (on the most part) have.
Everything from how to search for information on the web through to basic computer house keeping skills.
I just shake my head when a child ask me a tech related question and receive a blank look when I ask if they have used the help, search or google function.
I believe Billy has great success with iPads in her classroom, but she has grommets instead of fiends to work with.
(Billy, enter now please)
My sister got an macbook pro from her school for year 11 and 12.
I offered to hack past their security and install some games and stuff for her but she was too goody goody lol.

Definitely, but the things that are being done need support of the parents.
At the moment, there is a massive chasm between kids who have had access and know by the time they are 4 or 5 how to do the google searches etc and kids who don’t have access who don’t know anything about them - that is why the laptops for all students are a good idea.
Unfortunately, its going to take about another 30 years before all the fuddy-duddy teachers who don’t know how to use them end up retiring. Can’t see an easy way to fix that problem either, except to just go easy on them as everything really is happening at an alarming rate….and I don’t think its right to just ditch teachers who don’t get it, either.
If they bypass the schools controls on a laptop given to them to use by the school and are caught doing so, they’ll be busted (and deservedly so) as all the kids sign agreements about appropriate use of laptops and abiding by school internet policy.
My opinion is that parents should do their utmost to support the use of the school given laptop for educational means only, by not doing so parents are condoning (and helping) students to stuff around in class and do everything but what they are supposed to be doing!
Reminds me of the South Park episode where Mr Mackay is trying to teach the kids how to use a computer, but clearly he doesnt know what he is doing whilst all the kids are playing an online war game against each other.
Eh, on a mac, just install bootcamp and leave OSX on it. It boots naturally into the normal OS but you can still use it without all the controls on it when you want to. Like play a game, watch a movie or change settings or internet browsers.
Alternatively, on a PC, install a 2nd partition and hide the boot sequence unless you hit F9.
Though if they are giving kids netbooks, I hope they upgrade every 2 years because those things won’t last…

Why should with kids with access to better computer equipment be forced to use inferior equipment?

This thread is getting closer and closer to PC vs Mac. It’s funny but increasing amounts of my friends are switching from Iphone to Android based phones despite swearing black and blue earlier in the piece that Iphones were the bomb , bees knees, ducks guts etc, personally I think they have been well and truly surpassed in ease of use and functionality and ppl are waking up to the shortcomings of proprietary dramas with the Iphone.
