Just ordered an iPhone 5

Yea, but I’d like to stop taking my laptop for travelling. The 10” fills that hole where as the 7” is more for short train rides or sitting at lunch etc.

Nah think 10” is too big for travelling.

To each his own!

Anyway I am not paying for this so if I decide to upgrade later it wont bother me as much grin

Totally. If I was offered one for free, I wouldn’t complain.

First I need a better couch though smile

Can anyone touch type on those things?

With a bit of regular use you can certainly get up a bit of speed on them without looking at the keys so I guess it’s a form of touch typing but I’d still certainly choose typing on a full sized laptop or desktop keyboard if I had a choice.

On a android tablet you have a whole bunch of different keyboards available in the play store so you can usually find one that suits your typing style/predictions better.

If you are really concerned about typing you can also pick up something like a Asus Transformer style tablet which is essentially a netbook/tablet hybrid with a physical keyboard. Bluetooth keyboards are also an option.

I’ve found the default keyboard with the Nexus 7 to be pretty bad - far worse than my ancient iPhone.  I am definitely going to investigate other installable keyboard options.

Yea, I’d go bluetooth keyboard and mouse if I was using it to type. Most times I want a tablet is for travel / net surfing. At home, I got a PC and at work I got a PC. this is for other times.

And with no major holidays in the pipeline, I’m not in any rush to get it now.

Yeah I agree with TJ.

I am not bothered by the touchscreen typing - emails and the like i will use my BB (love that qwerty keyboard like you cords!)

I’ve got a 10.1 inch Asus eePC netbook and its perfect for travel. Even though you use it for web-browsing, I still find myself typing a lot when i web-browse….facebook chat, BW etc.

don’t think i want a tablet.

I use stock jellybean on my tablet but love swiftkey on my phone.

My parents have a asus eePC netbook, asus transformer prime (hybrid tablet) and normal laptop. They jut got back from 5 weeks in Europe and only took the transformer and had no regrets.

It amazing how quickly you form habits though. I’m constantly catching Dad trying to use the monitor on the laptop as a touchscreen, fingerprints galore!  teacherboy

Having said that I’m cringing as all my schools pump money into tablets (ipads) as it’s the current fad. For the same price I believe netbooks would be of more use educationally.

Yeah Cords - if you have that no need to get a tablet i suppose.

I am just keen for some apps and games I don’t get on the bb. And a larger screen for web browsing.

I think I type quicker on tablets than I do the keyboard on my tablet. The keys are flat and squashed together compared to a normal keyboard it is actually slower for me.

I use my bluetooth apple keyboard with my ipad if I need to type at length.

Wildman got a netbook at the start of this year and hates it, uses his Mac to do everything and only uses it school if he is forced to.

I think schools should really step up, so if a student has their own laptop or tablet be able to use them at school.

I know there are plenty of tech and $$$$ problems, but the divide is getting smaller smile

Have to disagree there, azz. Its difficult enough as it is to have any level of control about what students can access and when at school - bringing their ‘own’ computers would complicate this beyond comprehension. You’ll have to take my word for it that it is difficult enough as it is to keep kids on task with their government laptops but with a whole bunch of their own entertainment to play with, having them focus on the task at hand would be nigh on impossible.

By using the netbooks given to them by the school, the school and government still technically own the laptop, which means any incorrect use can have proper consequences and also that they are bound by the guidelines they have agreed to. Laptops can be confiscated etc.

A few kids don’t like using them and just use regular pen and paper instead and that is fair enough, I reckon. but they are supposed to have them in their bags so that they can be used to access stuff on the net with the rest of the class if need be. That seems to work just fine.
