I’m the exception to the rule, I can be a bit sentimental with the English language. raspberry

and so you should continue to be!

I’m not a fan of the americanised spellings of everything at all.

I thought that both jail and gaol are acceptable in Australian English?????

depends what you mean by acceptable?

Do people use the spelling variations all the time? Yes. Does that make it acceptable? Depends who you speak to. ‘Our’ dictionary, the Macquarie uses gaol but I’m sure it lists jail as a variation.

I’m sure you’d find that Hansard uses ‘gaol’, too.

People also use imaginary words like “disorientated” etc as well & no one ever seems to notice but I don’t think it means they become real words. Some may disagree and I can see that point as well.

Um I think what mizu means is that there are actually Goal’s still in Australia!

Museum type places and the like.

Also it is still in the dictionary! (you know a real paper one!)

Sorry i don’t follow your post at all, Oz.

Museums and gaols?

Oz I think Cords is trying to say that we should use the word “gaol” rather than “jail”. She’s not saying gaols don’t exist.

Avatar

Yeah i know that - be Mizu said it is a term that is still acceptable. ie it is currently still being used.

ah yes, ashstix. I’m advocating use of the Australian spelling. Gaol.

and I’m a female, just to clear that up. lol

Avatar

yeah of course it is and that is what I said. I said that Hansard uses it and I said it is the spelling in the Macquarie dictionary…

I just thought that we accept both the American “jail” and the British “gaol”, in Australian English?????

LOL sorry my bad!

It was always “jail” for at least the first 30 years of my life. I’m against the Americanisation of the English language, but “gaol” is simply being tossy for the sake of it.

I prefer “jail”, my brain always want to pronounce “goal” as “goal for some reason.  I’m guilty of making up words, my dragoness accuses me of doing it all the time red face
