The next Shred, WHERE?

You could come and go as you wanted and with the warm weather it was funny to watch everyone head back to thier room to come back out with just a T-shirt. You couldn’t have done this if we’d all stayed at the Station?!

You could have dropped it off at the car / bus. If you were the driver and had the keys.

Otherwise, you’d have been up for a $10 locker at the Perisher center…

Pretty sure it will be where Rider gets the most “assistance” from the mountain to make it a big thing. Thredbo last year was a pain to work with and while Perisher was better this year, they still didn’t really offer us anything to go there.

I have heard that Thredbo management has changed and it might be a lot better next year and are trying to pull strings etc but it would be good to see what the Mexican mountains can do for us as well. It would be good to get all the people from Melbourne more involved in the shred and while we may lose some of the NSW riders by having a year south of the boarder, we will probably pick up a few people who won’t come to NSW for a ride.

If it is in Vic for next year, we can try to organise a 12 seater and group trip down if we can get the right amount of people. It would be much more fun with a big group! smile

Travel to Hoth or Falls is really only 1 1/2 - 2 hours longer than Thredbo/Perisher, so I don’t think access will be an issue?????

Pretty much every single contest Boardworld runs is designed to attract new members, with the intent of encouraging them to stick around. This is how Boardworld survives.

The Shred would still be “the same thing”, just with more people.

Do music festivals suck because there’s more people than just you and your friends there?

I dont believe that site survives on intending people to join. It survives on Members. I’d imagine just like any football team the goal is to increase its membership base but its the members that keep it surviving. The only thing I can see you are 100% correct about is the contests would be designed to attract new members and increase that base. I figure the shred is like a membership day that celebrates and rewards members for being there and supporting their team. How many teams give away free or cheeper merchandise to non-members? None. Why? Why would you reward someone for not helping? My point is, time and time again Ive heard you all complain about people joining to win a prize only to dissapear in the void of previous winners. Why dont they stay? They obviously know about the site enough to join and compete. But they dont stick around. Why is that? Maybe what you need is a bigger carrot? ...The shred. Join be an active member and you get a sweet deal at the end of the season.

And I’ll answer your question with another question. Whats better, a music festival with 50,000 people or an intimate concert? The answer is neither because its whatever you’d want. If you want to stay on-snow then do it. If you dont then dont! But you shouldnt complain about the way the others want their concert.

And how many joined? Perhaps, instead, a large group of riders cruising around Perisher gave the impression Boardworld was a somewhat exclusive clique?

And what would you have everyone do? Not wear their team colours and blend into the crowd? Teams have jerseys for a reason. To be proud and show who they support. The same can be said for the boardworld tees and hoodies. In fact bought a hoodie because I wasnt part of that crowd! It might not have an an immediate increase in memberbase but it gets the name out there for people to see and talk about. I would suggest to Rider that if we ever stayed at the sundesk again to invest in a massive banner to hang off the side of the balcony. Couldnt have gotten a better position for an advertising billboard than the top of front valley.

To me, the best thing about the Shred is the opportunity to meet members and have fun together. I see Boardworld as a big community of friends and like-minded people who love riding boards. The main benefit, the way I see it, is we bond and make our community stronger. Yeah, some people may see it as a group or whatever, but we are one of the most welcoming communities I have ever been involved with. We invite friends of members, young and old, all ability levels, all backgrounds… there isn’t one instance that I have thought Boardworld was exclusive or anything like that. I think this is really important for Boardworld moving forward. We need to keep be welcoming, encouraging, helpful and friendly - that’s what Boardworld was built on and what’s always been important to me.

I did feel Perisher was a bit too spread out, and I would have liked to spend more time with everyone, but it was an amazing trip, and the time we did spend together was an absolute blast. Next year I will try to organise the on-snow shredding a bit better. It looks like Thredbo and Hotham are the front runners for next year, so that should make it easier already.

The promotional aspect of the Shred is just a coincidental bonus. Of course it’s really cool having so many people riding together, causing a scene (in a good way) and everyone wearing Boardworld hoodies with big smiles on their faces. I’m sure it arouses people’s curiosity and maybe they will check the site out. It’s actually really hard converting “visitors” of the site to active forum members - but that doesn’t mean they don’t go through the site, watch our videos, click on pages etc. That’s valuable to us as well, and hopefully they will eventually read enough to make them want to actively join in, but that process does take some time for some people. All in all, we’re growing at a really good rate. But I agree, active members are the life and soul of Boardworld. This site would be nothing without our members, and the forums/community continues to be our main focus with the site. At the same time I realise this can’t be forced onto people. We need to give them every reason to join, we need to encourage them to join, we need to give them reasons to click onto the forums - but the only thing that will keep them here is their wanting to be here, and I hope we will keep creating new awesome reasons for wanting to be here. Honesty, you guys rock and I love how much you all care about our community!

Anyway, that’s my thoughts on the matter. SHRED2013_BRINGITON! shaka

I like the banner idea!!!!!

It could have a disclaimer at the foot of it?????

“We apologise for the Shred taking over this resort - if you don’t like it, sign up and join in”

Pretty sure it will be where Rider gets the most “assistance” from the mountain to make it a big thing. Thredbo last year was a pain to work with and while Perisher was better this year, they still didn’t really offer us anything to go there.

That’s it. I want the resorts to help us out more than they have the last two years. I have a meeting with Thredbo tomorrow and I’m hoping we will all be on the same page. They have been very helpful and easy to deal with this season, which has been very encouraging. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow and I will keep you guys posted.
