Phones are getting way too big these days.
Samsung’s phones sure are. They’re a bit like those ridiculous Swiss Army knives with waaaaaaaayyyyyyy to many features - so it no longer fits nicely in your pocket.
. . . it seems to be the difference between the old iPhone and the new one is it’s bigger . . .
Aside from a little added length, it’s actually smaller and lighter - and still fits in your pocket just as nicely.
My s2 fits saweetly in all my pockets.
I did however change from OPTUS to Telstra (Even though I hated doing so), cause the reception of OPTUS in the Illawarra is sooo shithouse!!!!!
I am about to do this, Optus is dogshit in the gong. I only just put up with it in Melbourne due to being in an office most of the day so if i needed the net i would use my laptop. But now that i am onsite all day everyday it is unacceptable to be paying for a service i am not receiving.
As a few of the guys on here know, i work for a Telco company (Optus) as a Network Engineer, as when most people find that out they are quick to jump down my throat about how they have sh*t reception and about how Optus call centres suck etc etc.
Telco companies in Australia cop alot of flack, for the few times the phone lets them down instead of the thousands of times they can send that text message, write that FB post or make that life saving phone call. A big thing i hear from alot of people is “Optus has shit coverage im going to Telstra” dont get me wrong, we dont have perfect mobile reception, but believe it or not, niether does Telstra. Alot of Telstra’s reputation for coverage has been adopted from before Mobile phones were popular, Telstra/Telecom have used their reputation from Fixed line services (home phone) and are riding on the coat tails of people knowing when they pick up their home phone 99% of the time they will hear dial tone and can make a nice clean crisp call to another fixed line.
Up until recently i have had 2 Optus phones, a 3 phone (voda) and a Telstra Phone and besides the 3 phone saw similar reception on the Optus and Telstra phones, when the Optus one had no coverage my Optus one would, and vice versa. The 3/Voda was just an all round fail at most times. Hence why that one has now been terminated.
The size, landscape and population of Australia makes its very hard to get good coverage everywhere, that and the fact that we only have 3 major Telco carriers in Australia and the spread of the Population makes it impossible to guarantee coverage everywhere. I was talking to Spaz down the shred about the rapid growth of Smart phones and the strain they are putting on Mobile networks. Perisher for example is a great scenario, there is such a high density of people and 95% of the time you have reception but cant make a call or check FB, the smart phones are constantly hitting the network towers to check for emails, update the network of their locations, receive social media notifications and thousands of other apps are doing the same thing. We only have X amount of backhaul to a base station. If we all went back to basic 2G handsets and left the internet for at home over fixed line we would probably be all over the moon with our mobile reception.
Sorry if this sounds like a rant more just nerding it up a bit, i have heard alot of stories of people expecting to pay more to get more at Telstra and have wound up finding that they have worse reception that they did with their last carrier. Its best to try and find who has the best reception where you spend most of your time or receive most of your calls. All carriers are going to have their good and bad spots.
Cheers
Josh
Can you get Optus to work better around Chill Hill please?
I can get much better deals with Optus
Thanks in advance
Josh you have some good points but the line where you say that people have reception but can’t use their phones is congestion. Then should put another tower in like Telstra did.
Other than Jindy I seem to have better reception than most of my friends and I have no complaints about the call centers either. (i am an optus customer)
I travel often and regularly to remote areas. Telstra’s coverage sh/ts on Optus’. I thought that was common knowledge??
Have 4 mates who have jumped ship from optus to Telstra, all live around me/travel same palces i do and they all have reception whenever they go and i dont. So i know optus licks balls in my area, so im bailing. Sick of paying for somethign i am not getting.
But it aint your fault and people shouldnt be jumping down your throat

See thats not my experience.
Mates have a farm near Bowral and their telstra phones have no reception there.
And other areas.
Was pretty much signed up for a S3, but today I read the S4 is coming in Feb/Mar. And it will be 5”. I might rethink and go for something smaller. Phones are just getting too damned big.

That’s another reason why I went with the iPhone!!!!!
If ya really must have a bigger screen, then use a tablet?????

Just used mine from the Gong to Hotham, and the only bits where I noticed zero reception with Telstra was up Maq Pass, and up the Alpine Rd to Hotham (in sections)!!!!!

If you like the current feature set of an S3 just get one. You’ll never end up getting anything if you are worried about what is coming in the future as their are always murmers of what’s on the horizon.
As far as I know the S4 stuff is purely rumours with nothing official. I believe Samsung may have even denied it and Feb/Mar isn’t really that soon.
Having said that I should let you know that the 4G S3 is only a couple of weeks away and that is kind of make or break for some people.
Buy the phone (or any tech related device) for what you want it to do now, not in the future.

We’re treading a fine line here but I’ll simply state you have a “choice” of many different android phones hense a choice in screen size. If you want a huge phone grab a note 2, medium/large a S3 and the S2 with it’s 4.27” screen offers incredible bang for your buck. You also have this increased choice when it comes to tablets i.e 7”, 10”
That’s just samsungs there’s also many other options you could consider
Exactly cause any piece of tech is almost obsolete in a month!
Just came from a Motorola Android!!!!!
Similar sized screen as the iPhone 4S that I have now!!!!!

Yes I am well aware of that but I’m confused about the relevance of your statement being that a reason you went for a iPhone was because of the screen size?????
I can understand other reasons for the choice but you aren’t forced to buy a “big” android.
Personally I’m glad Apple has upped the screen size for the i5 though I think they could have taken it ever further. When I went from a 3GS to my S2 I was concerned the S2 would be too large. After using it for a couple of days when I went back to use the iPhone it became apparent how quickly I had become accustomed and preferred the increase in screen size. Admittedly as powerful as a Note 2 is I wouldn’t want something that large but I’m glad I have the option if I did.
