Canon Pancake lenses

Avatar

Hey guys
So I was looking at investing in a new lens and was seriously considering the Canon 40mm F2.8 STM pancake lens. Has anyone got/used this lens or heard or know anything about it that could give me some advise. My camera gear ATM is

50mm fixed lens (which is in for repair)
A stock 18-55mm
And a stock 55-200mm
And my camera is a canon 550d

I was looking at getting fisheye but I don’t really film enough to be using it and although I take a fair few skate photos I also use my camera a lot taking photos of like non sport stuff so I’m not sure what to invest in.
If anyone could help me that would be sick
Cheers,
TT

Hi mate,

Being a new lens, I have no experience with this one. Also, not knowing what your primary use for this lens would be, it’s hard to know what to recommend.

Below is a very good, thorough review of this lens you should check out. It might clear a few things up for you.

Certainly it is a VERY well priced lens, and performs well.

I don’t what how much it’s costing you to fix the 50mm lens (assuming you have the 1.8 II), but if it’s more than $130, this might be more preferable.

Alright thanks heaps. I’m getting my 50mm fixed ATM for free I think it is just some sand or dirt in the lens.
Like its hard to explain but I just take photos of everything really haha like this is my Flickr

Do you think there is a significant enough difference between this lens and the 50mm though?? Cause although it’s still reasonably proced it’s still a fair bit of money for me :/ haha

TBH, I’m struggling to find a clear answer to that one. I think overall it seems to be a far nicer lens than the nifty fifty. It seems to edge the 50mm in terms of focusing ability, Build quality, and also having more aperture blades should provide far better out of focus areas.

The fifty would be a better option for stopping action in very low light though.

I guess I’d probably prefer the pancake as a backup lens.

Looking at your photostream, I’d say it would be a worthwhile addition for you. It would be the better lens for your skating shots and landscapes IMO.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

BTW, you take some really nice photos. I added you as a contact.
