1-2 September 2012 - Perisher

It all began on Monday, my GF and I decided we wanted to go to the snow on the weekend. So after much calling around and trying to sort people out to come. We realised that the majority of our friends were super-poor uni students. So we skipped that idea and invited my GFs family instead.

Fast forward to Thursday.

We drive a tiny car, so if we pack it with gear it looks like this. (Imagine a Citroen C2 with 2 boards and 1 travel bad in it, me in drivers seat with steering wheel on my chest). So we rented a car, a nice big Nissan X-Trail. So we wouldn’t look out of place, it had QLD plates, bald tyres and damage all along the side. Quality rental, only felt like I had a 50% chance of fiery death. We loaded the car up Thursday night so we could leave straight after work on Friday and avoid shitty Canberra traffic going to Jindabyne. For the first time I got to drive past Rhythm without having to stop to get rental equipment for somebody. But I did anyway, to get a photo of myself in front of Rhythm jumping with excitement.

Our snowboards both had storage waxes, so we popped into Cherri Pow to get it scraped off and the bindings set forward a bit (had the boards set up for Japan). Checked in to our cabin, took lots of photos of Kangaroos with joeys hanging out and then went to bed early. We had an early start.

0600. Patches of frost on the grass, ice on the roof of the other cabins. Overcast. Perfect.
Got up to the skitube, picked up lift passes. Got the 740 tube. Arrived before the lifts had started to operate and we were one of the first people up to the top of front valley took a quick photo before we went down (photo looking down over the groomed untouched run). The snow was fantastic, nobody around, overcast with a light splattering of snow falling.

After a few runs of Front Valley, I hear someone yell out “Mike!”. Normally I would ignore this, it is a stupidly common name. But I was meeting people, from the internet, so I turned around and saw a dude in a Bruins jersey, just like he said he would be (this is how internet dating must work). TJ hung with us for a few more runs of Front Valley, then we did a few runs from Mid Station down to the Quad. Had a nice hot chocolate around 0930 and that is where Ash joined us. We started to head towards the interceptor and then towards Blue Cow. It was at this point my significant other wanted to return to the Green runs to practice linking her turns on her new board, I will be honest, I was having issues getting used to my board as well. It was much stiffer than my old board (and these are not stiff boards by any measure). So back towards Front Valley, Pretty Valley, Pleasant Valley etc. we headed.

Part 2:

I might take this time to talk about the brand new board, boots and bindings I had. Starting with the boots. They’re freakin awesome, I feel as though the outer laces are not needed the velco and pull string inner boot seems like a tight enough fit, add the outer shell and it’s a fantastic fit. Probably want stiffer boots though, but these will do for now until I am up to doing harder runs and/or park.
Board and bindings, the NeverSummer SL 158 is a fantastic board. A lot stiffer for me, my old POS board (cipher I think was the brand) was super soft, super unpoppy etc. so it is quite a learning curve but I am getting used to it. I’ve got my feet set up a bit more open than they once were so that again is a new thing for me to get used to. I spent a lot of the first few runs getting comfortable, not really turning that well and catching an edge and arsing it. But, once I got used to it, I was tearing along (green and blues). Bindings, I dunno, I don’t really notice them, so assume that is covered in the board review as I view them as the one thing really.

New clothes, awesome, warm, waterproof. Libtech pants and O’Neil top. Helmet, super warm. I was thinkign I would have a cold head, but it warmed me better than any beanie I’ve had before. Goggles are great. Comfortable.

That will do for now. My chest infection is nasty as fuck, but clearing up.

To be continued…

Place holder day 2

Can someone delete this thread? Just after I got the video and pictures edited, I get a wonderful corrupt error and I can’t boot to windows. After a format, no pictures, no video.
