I’ve booked my trip to the shred with Virgin. I used them last year to get to Falls and when I traveled then, my snowboard was weighed with my backpack and as it was all under the 23kg limit I was good to go.
NOW, they have changed their policy so that you have to purchase additional baggage allowance FOR EACH PIECE of checked luggage, meaning I have to fork out another $45 each way for my snowboard!!!!
WTF VIRGIN !!!
The wording on the Qantas site confirms the yhave also changed to a pay per item system, but it’s impossible to get through to their call center after normal business hours to confirm :/
Really shitty about this
Lucky I just read itinerary few days ago Virgin & Qantas on fine prints:
BAGGAGE: This fare includes 7kg carry-on baggage only. If you wish to take checked baggage on your flight, you can pre-purchase the checked baggage allowance of up to 3 pieces (up to 23kgs per piece) up to one hour before departure of your flight
At the original I thought they have old system on baggage but got my gut feeling about it and discover the turth as above Sh!t
I have purchase extra baggage allowance online what a joke!
Yeah Farking airlines, they’re pure greed…
What type of snowboard bag do you have?
You should be able to stuff your board bag with heaps of stuff whilst staying under the 23kg limit as your one checked bag and then just pack the remainder of your stuff in carry on where you should get around 7kg of allowance.
Edit: Hang on just re-read don’t you even get 1 checked bag allowed? if so yeah that sucks.
double check with airline.. sometimes sporting goods is classified differently and might be cheaper
Aren’t all fares like this these days? well domestic flights have been like this for as long as i can remember?!
Prior to May this year, the 23kg limits allowed you to spread the weight across board bag and normal check-in luggage and they were essentially treated as one item. Now it’s per item. So I had to buy 2 lots of check in baggage allowance because I have two separate items to check in :/
In the past, allowances/exclusions were made for sporting goods, but I’ve checked with the airline by phone and the policy change effective from May this year means you def haver to pay separately for each item.
I only ever have one checked bag regardless of snowboarding or surfing holiday, not sure why you would want to spread it across two bags?

So u can spread your drugs across 2 bags, just incase they get 1
I’m not sure if it’s still the same, but I used to find Jetstar were the most flexible with baggage.
From memory you didn’t have to pay for 1 item of checked baggage, and the limit was 23kg.
I used to pack everything in my board bag, all my snow gear, all my clothes for the trip. The lot.
Things may have changed though. I don’t mind paying a little extra for checked baggage, as long as it’s not over the top.

My board bag isn’t big enough to cram a weeks worth of clothes + boarding gear, so I have a rucksac that holds all my stuff. Only board, helmet and gloves go in the board bag.

I’d put the $90 towards something like a Dakine Low Roller then. I’m planning on doing a month in Japan with the Low Roller + Carry on bag.
Yeah I took my board, girls board, all boots and outerwear in my boardbag for two weeks in the US and still came in under the 30 odd kg limit for international. Even less kg for NZ and managed the same less gf board.
Yep - its why i got a Wheelie gig!
Can you duffle not be carry on?
It’s all good, I’ve just ponied up the extra cash.
I’ll know better for next time and will think about getting a bigger board bag for this reason
out of interest what board bag are you using then?
Dakine tour was enough to hold 2 sets of outerwear boots helmet goggles board/bindings and other random small goods
still around the 20kg mark
my carry on fit the rest of the “normal” clothes ...and my carry on was tiny compared to what other people were lugging thru
enough for two weeks travel
It’s an old Burton board bag. (not sure of the model, but old). There is a middle helmet/gear pouch that fits a fair bit of gear, but I always travel with too much extra crap
Also, I’ll be coming home with an extra board, so there will be a little less room in there. At least I don’t have to worry about the extra board tipping me over weight now I’ve bought an extra allowance
