Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) by Elias Garcia Martinez has held pride of place in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church near Zaragoza for more than 100 years.
The woman took her brush to it after years of deterioration due to moisture.
The woman, in her 80s, was reportedly upset at the way the fresco had deteriorated and took it on herself to “restore” the image.
The once-dignified portrait now resembles a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic, he says.

Yeah, deano, they say that - but let’s face it, she would’ve been seen doing it. Obviously, nobody’s stepping up and accepting the blame for letting her get away with it. It’s not like buck-passing isn’t commonplace in the church.
The thing is, nobody questioned her - they just let her get on with it! Sure, it’s one of those situations where every person seeing her there would just assume that someone else had authorised her actions - but c’mon, really??? Perhaps next, someone will think the Mona Lisa might look better with a mo?
