hey guys!!!! been a while since ive been on here, but im gonig to japan next year and i need to get a new board for over there…
any1 got any good suggestions on what to get
For me there is no question, 162 T.Rice
or a Burton Fish 64 or 66
thats right only post when you need us!
Get a Burton Nug 146. Perfect for powder!
Weeeell - lots of schools of thought on this one. If you can - take 2 boards. One standard for everyday riding, the other a dedicated powder board. If that isn’t an option - take your standard size board and if you need to - shift your bindings back to lift the nose out of the snow.
Personally i’d avoid a super flexi park board, it will be fine for park, but you really don’t go to Jappers to ride park. I also avoid reverse camber boards - i just feel they don’t have enough power to drive through the snow - this is just personal taste!
For reference i’m 6ft 1 90ish kgs and i have a burton malolo 162 for powder and a 157 capita TFA for everything else. The capita is great but does suffer a bit in powder.
For your size feet, it’s a no brainer - a Capita ‘Charlie Slasher’. Check out Gamblor’s Japow videos on the Charlie. He did end up selling his, but that was because his feet were too small for the board. You don’t have that problem, Mika.
It’s referred to as a ‘powder board’ but it’s so much more! It’s got a 20mm tapered tail like Burton’s ‘Malolo’ powder machines (mentioned above), but it rides so much better in ALL conditions due to their much more practical rocker design. Capita uses what they call ‘Pow FK’ (Flat Kick) - which has rocker at the front, and a flat base from the mid section through the tail. It makes powder riding easier, conserves your energy, and transform incredibly tiring powder days into incredible, epic, pow days.
I used to have a Burton Malolo, and was amazed at the difference when I bought one of these instead.
Sure it’s an awesome pow board, but that’s to be expected - where it really surprises is cutting through chop, it punches like Chuck Norris! Let’s face it, the average powder day involves hitting fresh lines in the morning, then riding around through the rest of the day scoping out what’s left. THAT’s where this board really shines! Unlike Burton’s pow boards, this actually has a full sized tail - so you’re riding more centred and don’t feel like you’re too set back. You can ride this all day, and not feel like you’re compromising just for great float in pow. It carves like a dream too! I thought my Malolo was great on steep Japanese groomed runs, but this board blows it away!
^^^good advice
i just love my malolo - we’ve been through a lot.
The Malolo is a great powder board but I don’t really get this hate for Reverse Camber in powder… RC was built to help non-pro’s in powder and in the park. I rode the Scallywag for 4 days and had a great time in the powder!
Yeah i sort of agree - i had a T.Rice and took that away to the powder. I’ve also tried a host of other RC/Hybrid boards and they just didn’t do it for me. I ended up giving my T.Rice away to a buddy who rode it and loved it. I figured he’d enjoy it more than me.

Who hates reverse camber in pow??? I’d say, for the majority, it just the opposite.

HUH??? What, you think pro’s don’t appreciate it too??? Reverse camber is simply better in certain circumstances - pro or not.

me.well…. hate is strong word, i prefer camber in all situations.

Howdy was against it. I guess hate was a bit harsh.
I’m sure the pro’s do. But big mountain pow boarders generally go standard camber as it lands jumps better is what I meant.
captain howdy knows all
I’m a big fan of reverse camber (or a hybrid) in deep pow. It just makes it more fun! I still prefer riding full cambered boards 80% of the time but rocker definitely has its merits. I rode cambered boards in pow for years and I can still do it no problem, but I much prefer being on a rockered board on those deep days; quite simply, it keeps me riding for longer. Not only the float in pow, but later in the day when everything is still soft but chopped to bits, you can just fly over everything.
The question is, do you want this board purely for riding deep, fluffy pow? Or do you want something more versatile? You bought a Skate Banana last season, didn’t you? What size is it? I’ve actually heard from a lot of people that they go really well in the pow.

I agree with Chucky. Traditional camber has its advantages in some areas but powder definitely isn’t one of them.
It becomes particularly apparent on flatter powder sections when two people (one on traditional camber and one with rocker/reverse camber) ride next to each other, the one of the camber board is always leaning back struggling to keep the nose up and the one with rocker isn’t worried about that at all. Rocker lifts your nose out= exactly what you want in powder. In powder you aren’t looking to load up your board to gain power like on-piste when carving or popping for ground moves. This coming from someone that always rode camber in powder (and was always the sucker trying to keep my nose out in flat sections) and has only just converted to reverse camber boards. Is my opinion the banana shape or variations win in powder by a country mile (although now that I think of it, I don’t actually know what a country mile is haha)
