The Olympic Games - London 2012

yep - he didn’t miss a single shot all the way up to the final, then bombed out and was going for the bronze and bombed out there, too! Bummer. I was so hoping I’d wake up this morning to see we’d taken our tally to 3 gold….although we kinda have cos a pair of sailing boys have an unassailable lead before their final in a day or two!

Devo the hockeyroos couldn’t manage to score a goal and make it through to the semis!

That really sucks about Michael Diamond, I thought with that perfect lead up he would smash it. Obviously the pressure was too much.

I saw the hockeyroos too, d’oh!!!

Now THIS is a REAL ‘Olympic moment’:

When ‘Super’ Felix Sanchez won gold in the men’s 400m hurdles, there was no Jess Ennis-like eruption from the crowd at Olympic Stadium. Eighty thousand-odd faces were staring at Dai Greene, the reigning world champion and home favourite, who had finished just out of the medals in fourth place.

But by the time Sanchez, from the Dominican Republic, was on the podium accepting his medal, they’d woken up.

This was the man who won gold in Athens eight years ago in exactly the same time he ran to win it again in London. This was the once-unbeatable man people said should retire, because he hadn’t cracked the top three at any major meet in five years.

But there he was, sobbing on the podium, a gold medallist again three weeks before his 35th birthday. The crowd finally roared.

Sanchez is probably celebrating too, now that he’s stopped crying. After crossing the finish line, he pulled a photograph out from behind the name tag on the front of his racing suit and dropped to the ground to kiss it.

It was a picture of his grandmother Lillian, who died while Sanchez was competing in Beijing, where Sanchez was eliminated in the heats.

“I just wanted to make her proud so I’ve got her name on my spikes. The day she died in Beijing it broke my heart. That’s why I ran with the picture close to my heart,” he said.

Sanchez came to a fork in the road a few years ago when, plagued by injury and advancing in age, there were those calls for Super Felix to take off his spikes for good.

But he made a second decision that “felt right” and last night in London he reaped the rewards. And in another great moment from these Olympics, the crowd didn’t let him cry alone.

From Wiki as I was curious, “There are five hurdle heights on most standard hurdles. The highest position, called a “high” hurdle (or sometimes a “college high” or “open high”) is used for men’s sprint hurdle races (60 m, 100 m and 110 m), which are 42 inches (106.7 cm). The next highest, frequently called a “high school high” 39 inches (99.1 cm) is used by masters men under age 50, high school and youth boys. The middle position of 36 inches (91.44 cm), is called an “intermediate” which is used for men’s long hurdle races (400 m) plus some youth and masters age divisions. The next lower position, 33 inches (83.8 cm) is called the “women’s high” used for women’s short hurdle races. The lowest position, called the “low hurdle” 30 inches (76.2 cm) is used for women’s long hurdles plus many youth and masters races. Some races call for 27 inches / 68.6 centimetres for youth or masters events. Hurdles that go to this position are rare and are notable by having a sixth position”.

Stoked seeing Chris Hoy earn another well deserved gold medal, in his last ever race as an Olympic cyclist.

The whole British crew formed a guard of honour to receive him at the end of his victory lap. It was a really touching Olympic moment - so naturally, Channel Nine instead went to an ad for ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’. F*cktards.

Sally Pearson was amazing in the semi finals of the hurdles. I can’t wait to watch her bring home gold!

Giddy up! Gold for Anna Meares AND Sally Pearson! Plus the kookaburras smashed pakistan 7-0 and the opals beat china.

Was really nice to see the sportsmanship from both runners up….Victoria Pendleton in the sprint cycling and Dawn Harper in the hurdles were both embracing our new aussie champs!
