I believe the photos are done by taking multiple pictures with 30 sec shutter then overlaying them in something like photoshop. One of Darks colleagues has done it.

ahhh makes much more sense, than trying to keep a shutter open for hours

You can do either way.

I have done the 3 hour exposure before, turned out pretty good.
