Who has a Split Board?

Avatar

Just curious who has them. Especially if anyone in Aus does. I know Gamblor has them as he does heaps of Jap Backcountry.
If you do what have you got?
I’d love to get one, but cant justify the $$ atm and it wouldnt get much use at all in Aus. I’d like to take it out along the Razor back and do some runs of Mt Feathertop. Last year I snowshoed and hiked out to get some turns but cover was minimal, and carying snowshoes sucks.

Yes, I have one. You’re welcome to buy it off me! I want to get the 2012 burton freebird but I don’t want to pay full price. Getting a used split is the way to go for sure. They get beat up so easily (in early season and in spring), or when you step on the skis and scratch them up.
They are so much better than snowshoes….unless you’re in technical terrain and unless you have good technique it can be the scariest/ crappiest experience! My local hill has steep up downs at the top which are a nightmare on the split. Within 10 minutes of starting my hike the first time I had crashed hard twice on declines and had gotten snow down my pants, up my back, on my sunnies and in my gloves! The second time I did it, it went a lot better.
Budget for split-specific bindings too (sparks or karakorams)

Always been keen to get one, but like K2 said, not sure how much use it would get in AUS.

Exploring backcountry/earning my turns, so to speak, is high on my list of must do things.

I’ve got a mate with one and he loves it. Heres a vid (POV and a bit slow):

He goes through the reconfig at the 4:30 mark.

Yeah I reckon it would be awesome, just don’t think any of my mates would be keen to do it and it doesn’t seem like a good idea to do and do that kinda stuff solo. Wouldn’t want to be stuck in a 127 hours style incident lol. LOL

Edit: Let me know when you get one K2 and I’ll cut my parkstar in half haha. Get some mad split parkboard action going. rolleyes Should work… right..?

yep, it would work and yes, having a splitboard buddy would be highly recommended. skiers work too in a pinch

Argh, don’t watch past the reconfigure point, started to make me feel sick, he coulda gone way more happy with the cut and delete functions on that and his mates taking some non POV footage woulda been much better.  Gamblor how much of a different feel is there using a split board when actually riding?  TBH it looks like they would go like a pig looking at the way they join them back together.

Whats the main difficulty with descending?  Is it cause you never learnt to ski or does the splitboard just handle badly?  Looks like the skins don’t actually attach at the back, they just rely on forward momentum to keep them in the right spot?  Maybe I will take to an old camber board of mine with a saw and see what happens ha ha!

I have the new G3 skins that have tail clips too. I highly recommend them for beginners. You don’t really need them that much - my friends don’t have them and they still kick my ass. In the beginning just handling skins is such a pain in the ass. The wind blows and they stick to each other while in your hands and it seems you spend all your time just pulling them apart. They get dirty really easily too. However, the more you use them the easier it gets. I seriously wanted to give up the first few times just dealing with the skins, but now it’s not too bad. I’m looking forward to next year when I should get better. When my friends put theirs on, it takes them 2 seconds. The ones without tail clips (you can buy just the tail clips and add them to your skins) stick just fine so you don’t need to worry about momentum.

Does the board ride like a pig? hmmm, not really. The split-specific bindings (spark r&d /karakoram) do a great job of pulling the halves together. I think the only thing i have to adjust to, is the stance width/angles. It’s a pain in the ass to change them with the voile pucks, so if during the season I adjust my stance on my regular board, I have to adapt back to the old stance on the split. I think the biggest thing is which split you get. If you split your old board it will ride way softer than it used to.

the difficulty with descending is that you’re on the equivalent of a really really fat pair of telemark skis with really loose bindings. I used to ski so I quickly figured it out on non-steep slopes, but on anything steep it really feels like it’s easy to twist a knee. oh, plus you have skins underneath so at times you slide and sometimes it doesn’t slide so good. You should put one knee down to go straight.

The bottom line is, you will love the split for the speed on flats and nice little descents, and for the fact that you don’t have a heavy board on your back. When you ride down, you don’t have snowshoes on your back.  You will hate the split for the price and for dealing with skins in the beginning. Just wait til you find yourself slipping backwards on a steep slope that you’re trying to go up. It sucks! Oh yeah, I recommend the split crampons too.

Yeh crampons would be a must for the steeper ascents and shity snow conditions

the spark crampons (mr.chomps) can be put on without taking your binding off which is great. The voile ones can’t. Don’t know about karakoram.
