Edges help?!!

Avatar

I got a board last year and only rode it once. The guy I bought it from offered to detune it then and there. Cool thanks! When I went to ride it I had heaps of trouble turning and holding an edge. Because I’m a beginner I really didn’t know if it was me or the board but either way I went home angry. Blizz went to wax my board and found that the nose and tail have been ‘detuned’ (whatever that really means?!) too far around the nose and tail. She said its like seriously rounded. She said as far as she understands it’s only supposed to be slightly rounded where it tapers off from the edge towards the tip/tail. She doesn’t know how to fix it and well I’m not a park rider so I can’t have a board with rounded edges because I can’t turn. How do we fix it so I can ride my new board???!

Any advice is appreciated!

Detuning just means that the edges have been filed slightly to remove irregularities and burrs etc and to put the correct angle on the edge for either park or regular riding… If someone has filed the edges too much or beveled (rounded) them, it doesn’t sound like something you could fix too easily yourself.

Probably best to take it into your local board store and get em to check it out. They’ll be able to tell at a glance if there really is a problem and whether it could be fixed.

Good luck mate. Hope you get it sorted shaka

i rode my board “factory” tuned for a couple of weekends at the start of the season then nthn told me i should de tune the very tip and tail bits or the rail abit, he did it for me a little and it made a difference. then after a weekend on that i got even more eager, got the file out and rounded about the first and last 2.5 inches of metal edge on both sides, LOVE IT. still have great edge control and the boards so much more playful, easier to flat base and catch free.

This probably hasnt helped you at all, but i just wanted to share haha, id say take it to a board store and see what they have to say

Take it into a reputable snowboard shop and get them to fix it up, explain what has happened and they should be able to sort you out in 10 mins.

Thanks for your help so far everyone. I’m really devo for dark cause this is his first ever brand new board. We bought it from a fairly big shop in Jindy so you would have thought they would know what they were doing :-(

De-tunin is normally only done at the “contact points” of the board (the widest points of the nose and tail), it is the rounding of the edge so as to lessen the chance of this edge from takin hold into the surface of the snow and throwin the rider off balance!!!!! (Catching an edge)

However, it sounds like ya sayin that the edge has been de-tuned the complete way around from these points, all the way around the nose/tail?????

If this is the case, then there is absolutely no need to do a thing with these edges as thay don’t play a part in the performance of the board anyway!!!!!

(I actually de-tune these sections deliberately myself!!!!! It doesn’t have to be sharp so this lessens the likelihood of it cuttin gloves skin etc etc!!!!!)

As shown here anythin toward the nose/tail from the red line is completely ok to detune!!!!! The edge between the red lines (known as “The Effective Edge” is where it has to be sharp in order to control direction of the board)

Hope this helps?????

That helps heaps thanks!! So I’ll just take my board to a shop and ask them to fix it for me. Done! Thanks everyone for the advice!

With that picture as the example the edges were rounded way past the red line (probably somewhere in the middle of where the red line is and the bindings of both ends) Why would the guy do that? Blizz said that park riders generally have that but if I told the guy that I just cruise around did he just make a mistake or did he stuff up my board on purpose thinking everyone wants to ride park?!

Yeah, a lot of the street style jibbers will round their edges completely in order not to catch an edge on the features that they are hittin!!!!!

Some companies even make boards that are purely made for this and don’t even have steel edges whatsoever!!!!!

The guys that hit the booters in the park though, still want control in order to line up their position perfectly for take off, so they still tune their effective edge nice and sharp!!!!!

If ya pretty handy at most hands on things, ya can always buy an edge file from the shop and give it a crack yaself????? The guy in the shop will probably even show ya how to use it with a quick run down!!!!!

This does all depend on how savage the guy was with the board though!!!!! If he has rounded too much off, worst case scenario he might have gone as far as to leave the edge irreparable!!!!! Hopefully he hasn’t done that to ya!!!!!

Incorrect. Detuning has nothing to do with putting “the correct angle on the edge for either park or regular riding”. It may have not been your intention, but it reads like you’re confusing ‘tuning’ with DEtuning’.

As yours was the first reply and people come on here for help/info - just so there’s no confusion, reckon you could edit your post with the correct information?

We have an edge tuning tool so will work on it. Still very disappointed, but at least we have a 154cm StepChild Powdersucks board Dark can ride grin

i have never detuned any of my boards. I dont feel the need too.

alot of boards are coming right out the factory with everything ready to ride these days.

My board came tuned on the edges and de-tuned in the right places, even came with a coat of wax! all that was left to to was strap in and ride.

obviously different brands all do things differently. but I know that Lib and GNU come from factory ready to ride.

^ To ensure you file evenly, run a black Sharpie/Artline or similar along your edge prior to filing - so as you’re filing, you know which parts have been done and which parts still need more (as the black disappears).
