1st shot - hit the shutter way too early, and you need a faster shutter speed to prevent the blurring of the rider
2nd shot - I like it
3rd shot - no idea on how to remove the glare
Awesome man, thanks for the advice except for number 3 haha
you can’t remove the glare. Next time open the window, or if you can’t, have someone hold a black sheet up behind you
Thanks Gamblor, didn’t want to try fix it if I wasn’t going to get anywhere…
Just saw the potential shot and took it without much time but that black sheet is a good idea
I purchased an ND filter a few weeks ago and got to give it a whirl last week, first time using one so below are a bunch of different shots. Would love some feedback on what can be improved!
This and the below are are the same - I can’t decide which I prefer! I think if I re-colour correct the uncropped image with the sky a less desaturated hue, it might be nice?
and… go! (I’m looking at you Gamblor! ) If you guys like some of these, I’m slowly putting up more shots on my facebook page found at http://www.facebook.com/fridgemagnetfootage, like it if you want to see more as they come, or alternatively to grill me on what is good and what is not. Feedback is everything!
that last shot is trippy dude :D
It looked like you were shooting into water but the stars were throwing me off. Looks like the capita bsod. cool abstract. Feels like you’re looking out the window on a spaceship.
I would advise against having a nice blue sky and a desaturated rest of photo. That makes it gimmicky. Just do a straight b+w or straight b+w and add a hint of warm colour. I use the split toning tool in lightroom for that.
For the others, you said you were testing your ND filter but were those shots high contrast? I normally associate an ND filter with a sunset/sunrise photo. Note I don’t have an ND filter so don’t have any direct experience. Also, I was having monitor issues which I THINK I’ve solved with a new calibrator but I’m not 100% sure. It looks like the clouds are blown out? I can comment on composition though.
1st shot
foreground is crooked. I think you should retry this shot at sunset or sunrise to get an aurora look to it. or slow shutter at night to get the star trails. I don’t know, that tree isn’t doing much for me.
2nd shot
the colours in this one are good (if my monitor is correct). I would take a step to the left. I like the leading line from the log to the tree on the left but it feels like the log is too much into the picture. It crosses from the right three quarters across the shot. I guess I’d like to see some bigger clouds in the top right.
Since you’re doing nature shots, you’ve got to wait for mother nature to have things perfect. So scout out your perfect angle and then go there when the conditions are perfect.
Next two
I don’t like the crop. Makes the photo incomplete. I’m not a fan of this comp. If you’re going to slow shutter a river find a spot where we can see the rushing water better, like on the left there’s a little waterfall.
keep shooting!
edit: just looking through your facebook
I like the b+w “tree’s of the snow mountains” btw no apostrophe needed for plurals
that first tree pic on here looks better blown up as you can see the textures on the tree.
Agree on everything you said!
I also don’t have much knowledge about ND filters, but I enjoyed the fluidity of the clouds. It was more of a test of shooting a 30sec exposure in the middle of the day, but I’m waiting for the right time and place to try out sunset/sunrise. And I forgot my intervalometer, so it was either 25s or 30s exposures and that probably contributed to blowing out the sky?
Those tree’s are all about an hour out of Jindy (towards syd) and I would definitely like to shoot them at sunset, but like you said, timing and nature have to work together, and we were hustling home
Thanks for the comp. tips, heading on a great ocean rd trip next week and will work on it and post the results.
ps - english was not my favourite at school, that apostrophe is outta there!
hey guys, I’m getting into some studio photography now so in the coming weeks ill whack some stuff up for your viewing pleasure.. mainly interested in high key shots though love some low key product shots..
Great soulman!
But be aware this thread is for recieving feedback and critic.
If you just want to show us your photos for our pleasure you can start a new thread.
Fmf, the only crit I can give is on the first shot; the cloud doesn’t seem to compliment the tree - for me the tree would be better with just the sky as a background.
1st problem, skier in it
WOW.. Nice photography….
Went out last night and took a few long exposure shots seeing the night was clear. Knew a good hill out in the burbs that had some good views. Here are some of my better shots.
It started to get quite windy so it really reduced the sharpness in some of the photos due to trees moving and vibrations in the tripod.
Most the exposures are around 20-25-30 seconds. F3.5 most the time. Iso100-200 mostly, some 400.
Used my 18-55mm and also my fisheye
Was on a hill with no flat area to shoot from so was hard to get some horizon lines level by sight (should have found the level bubble function on the camera but was lazy)
Mostly was trial and error.
Could I have some advice/tips on taking night scapes and star shots please!!
I had trouble composing the photo with the darkness in both live view and viewfidner. just used a photo then adjusted.
Focus was a hard one too. Any tips?
Which photo do you like the best and why?
I dont expect critique on all cos there is a few, so maybe general advice and pic 1 photo and i’d be super happy
Here is one more. This is one of my favs. This one is the only one I adjusted in PS. Just did a tone adjustment thats all.
Cam, what settings/set up did u use to get this shot? Its sick!
