Anyone heading over the ditch this season? I shall be there early July staying in Wanaka. It’s my first time as well any recommendations?
Im tempted. i have access to free accomodation in wanaka and a car…
I recommend;
-Snow park is epic! go there multiple times (if you like park anyway)
-if there is any fresh snow, Treble Cone is the only place to go
-Remarks are fun as f*ck, i hiked the back ridgelines last time i was there. Sooooooooo fun
-Fergburger in Qtown is a must
awesome thanks for the tips!!! Oh now I’m hungry! never tried fergburger before. (only been to queenstown once ages ago).
Once you have it, no burger comes close.
I am fond of the cockle-doodle-oink burger.
Missus loves the Chief Wiggum one.
I have been twice, stayed once in Qtown the other in Wanaka. Wanaka was my preferred spot, there is the Wanaka Hotel where we stayed, the accom was basic but enough and the pub attached to it had decent enough food and very cheap beer. There is a few other bars in town, the backpacker bar looked like it could be fun, all in all though if you wanted to party Qtown would be better. I didn’t really so Wanaka was great, the proximity to Cardrona was awesome as well Snow Park and Treble Cone. Treble Cone is no good if you want to ride park but amazing if theres snow with heaps of natural half pipes and hits to keep you interested, I would also say it has the best steeps out of the Wanaka resorts.
Qtown has Coronet and Remarks, Coronet can be fun and seems to have a lot more terrain than Remarks but the Remarks has way better parks.
If you have the budget and snow is good, go heliboarding, it’s so worthwhile! If you do go helboarding do not go on the jetboats the next day, it’s massively lame in comparison!
awesome analysis there nthnbeachesguy! cheers! Yeah I’m just going with family this year so won’t be into the partying scene so much, just a chilled beer or two and a pub steak will please me fine :D
I’m keen to try out snow park it looks unreal!! I’m a bit of an all rounder though so will be keen to hit the other resorts too for some mountain riding.

When we were at TC we ventured out of bounds to ride some amazing natural pipes etc. But the rest of the resort was dogshit snow. icey as a motherf*cker. I will return there one day to ride pow
Snow Park is King. cheapest passes! however, early in July, I’m not sure how many features they will have put up yet. Snow Park is good though because they don’t need a whole lot of snow to get it going.
Food wise I have to say the Cow Place is great for Pizza, Good family restaurant and meet heaps of people, cause they were the pioneers of shared tables!
I love Remarkables that Ridge to the right is wicked!
Uhh!!! Already here! Moved into my new house in Wanaka yesterday. $20 passes to Cardys and Snow park, working at TC! Snow park’s opening on June 15th. So pumped.
I’m supporting statements for Ferg Burger and also The Kabab shop in Wanaka is good too!
oh yes, Sam. I got a kebab plate from that place a few times last year. So good! Chicken, chips and heaps of tabouli. Delicious!
I liked Snow Park but we only did the night riding which I reckon is the perfect amount of time to be there. I think I might get a little bored being there a whole day as the runs are so short. If I worked my way up to the big jump line maybe I would love the place, that does look epic but they’re pretty damn big.
The first time I did TC Deano there was about 5-10cms of fresh in the saddle basin and it was pretty epic. Once it gets all chopped up though it’s a bit of a nightmare cause some of it’s so steep. I’m assuming you hiked off to the left of the saddle basin chair and did the Motatapu Basin? I have hiked off and up to the left of that chair but always cut back in before the other basin so we could be lazy and not have to hike out ha ha!
Yeh we had to hike out the first time, 2nd time we cut back so as to avoid the hike.

I have never spent a whole day there, only done a handful of half days when i have been too lazy to get up the mountains early.
Was mad fun to work on my boardslides, lip slides etc. i never went near the halfpipe or massive jump line.
Will Be in Wanaka from 21st of July till end of month, for a few free days riding at cardrona and DSNZ festival, love to meet some BW members there for a drink or dinner
Some parts of New Zealand’s Canterbury region just scored 125cm in 24 hours, and this is what they were greeted with when they rolled up the shed door at Craigieburn.

Who was it that was going there in June and we all tried to tell him to go later? Whose having the last laugh now!
Man the festival is going to go off this year!
