binding angle

hey guys, I recently set up my board to have my back foot at an equal angle
to my front foot as I want to get better at riding switch. Anyway, I strapped
in and instantly my back foot started cramping up, is there anyway to stop this from
happening or fix it?
Cheers
Alex

Hey Alex,

How tall are you? How wide is your stance? What angles do you have on your bindings? Where was your foot cramping?

It can be one or a few of many things causing your discomfort.

Have a read through this thread as well: https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewthread/2597/

Please provide as much information as possible and we can try to find a solution.

hey I’m 164cm, stance is 15’, angle on my front foot is 15 and back foot is now 12, had to change it from 15 degrees.
cramping is in the arch of my foot

cheers

umm i may be incorrect but i dont see how the angle will make your arch cramp up?

That sounds like you need custom footbeds in your boots.

what about the width of the stance? im fairly small

Your stance is 15”? That’s ridiculously narrow, even at your height. Move it out to at least 20”. Are you measuring the width from the centre of the binding disks?

Now when you say the back is at 12, do you mean -12? i.e. are your toes pointed towards the tail of the board?

Deano has a good point as well. Did you get your boots expertly fitted? Do you wear orthotics in normal shoes? Do you have any after market footbeds in your boots?

Deano, poor stance choice can cause discomfort. Tweaks in stance could possibly make a difference.

Yeah ok so from the center its 20’’ and that feels fairly wide.. haha. toes pointed to the tail not sure if that means + or -? Yeah got my boots fitted at ballistyx, know the guy well.

yeh i 100% agree, but what i was getting at was that even with a ridiculous angle, you wouldnt necessarily be getting cramps in your arches. That problem indicates to me a footbed issue.

But yeh 15” is a wayyyyyyy small stance width

20” isn’t that wide for you. I wouldn’t go any narrower. I’m 170cm and I have a 22.5” stance, and even that isn’t very wide for my height. Anyway, I doubt that has anything to do with the discomfort.

If your back binding is pointing your toes towards the tail, that means it’s a negative angle (AKA duck stance). That all sounds fine too.

There’s a few things I suspect could be causing the cramps.

- Riding stance. As in your actual body position when you’re riding your board. If you aren’t centred and aligned, you could be putting unnecessary pressure through your back foot.

- Bindings. Feet often feel like they are cramping because of lack of blood flow. Are your binding straps centred over the centre of your boots? Are they digging in anywhere? Also, are you strapping down too tight? Sometimes if you go that extra click, it can put pressure on the top of your foot, restricting blood flow.

- Boots. How many days have you been riding in your boots? Were they heat molded? New boots need to be broken in. It could just be because they haven’t molded to the shape of your foot yet. They might need to soften up and pack out a bit. Lastly, I would highly recommend investing in a pair of after-market footbeds. Ideally you want custom molded footbeds, but even out-of-the-box footbeds such as Remind Insoles could make significant difference in comfory and support.

yeah that makes sense! I strapped in on carpet and noticed my weight is so much more over my back foot than centered. I have new boots, have only worn them about 5 hours in total..and lastly my bindings are too big for my boots, I moved all the straps around and couldn’t have the top straps centered because they dug into my foot when done up.. I’m probably going to get ‘superfeet’ innersoles once i’ve broken in my boots a bit..  I guess I will have to tweak it and get some hours under my belt to sort it out! thanks guys smile

Who sold you bindings that were too big for you?

*im assuming you bought them new

OK, so it looks like it’s a combination of the things I mentioned.

Give your boots some time to break in. Wear them around the house etc. Honestly speaking, most boots are uncomfortable for at least the first few days of riding.

Work on your riding stance. Read here: https://www.boardworld.com.au/snowboarding/content/category/balanced-body-position/

Consider buying bindings that are a) comfortable, and b) fit your boots properly.

Best of luck with it all. Let us know how you go. Happy snowboarding! shaka

my first boots were a lot bulkier and one size too big raspberry so finally got new boots and the bindings seem to not fit them as well! yeah I shall work on it thanks for all your help

ahhh i see. must be quite a change in the footprint of the boots to make your bindings too big!

I guess just play around with different settings to see if you can get some comfort, if not maybe look into a set of bindings that do fit.

Good luck mate!

its pretty common these days that newer boots have smaller footprints because they are getting alot slimmer with new technology and fashion.
especialy the more park style boots.. mine are almost like hi top sneakers.
