Just to throw a spanner in the works but task killing in android is a BAD thing. It was built as a multitasking OS and as a result performs most efficiently when used as one. The only time you should possibly need to use it is if an app has somehow locked up. Your android phone will still enter deep sleep mode without the need to force close apps it is all automated by the OS.

If you are really concerned about an app chewing resources you can easily isolate it by either uninstalling or freezing it with an app like titaniumbackup

A quick google gives me this site to show I’m not talking out of my @ss http://droid-den.com/android-guides/android-guide-should-i-use-a-task-killer/ and the really geeky technical version http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=678205

In the end the main culprits for battery drain are screen brighness, data connections (WIFI, 3G, GPS, weak cellular connection) and on the odd ocassion a poorly written app/rom

Strangely I often use application management on my android devices. Though 90% of the time only necessary apps are running in the background.

Run screen at half brightness.
Turn off WiFi (when not using it)
Turn off 3G (when not using internet)
Turn off data connections!!!!!

Do this and any phone will, at least, double it’s battery life.

Bluetooth!

It constantly scans for devices to sync too as well!

iphone 4 love it but got so much crap on it so therefore is now so slow! and the battery like is so rubbish!

Are you turning running apps off? You have to do this manually. Any thing left on will be slowing down the processor and chewing through battery especially if they use the internet - which most do.

Every few hours I would turn every running app off and at at the end of every day.
If my daughter had used the phone up to 20 apps would be left running as she would turn on any game she might want to play. As soon as an app is opened it keeps running in the background.

There are very few iPhone users that realise this. As a waiter as soon as I saw a customer with an iPhone I would ask them if they knew, in two years I’ve had about 3 that where aware. So many would go out of there way to come back and thank me.

Some apps will also chew up your data. I think this is a strategic move by apple to ensure carriers want to sell iPhones.

I regularly got 3 days from one charge on my 3Gs. Normally only a day and a half.

The iPhone 3G was labelled as having a terrible battery (and being slooooow). Now the battery is fantastic - it must take time for it to become good, When it was new the battery would last half a day (hours if being used) now it last days on standby and about 6hrs of use and charges super quick - 3/4 in 20min!!!

thanks heaps mate yeah i try to turn apps off but it is generally too late and i start doing it with like 10% battery i now have my phone on half brightness or less all the time and that doesnt bother me. its just a pain when i go out if i leave in the arvo and get home at like 6 in the morning i stress i will not have any battery left becuase once the drinks go down the more people get call haha. i need some sort of case that when lft in the sun it charges it is there such a thing???? would be pretty cool.

I’ve owned the iphone (admittedly only the 3GS) and an android (galaxy S2) and I have to say I absolutely LOVE the android OS, especially compared to IOS on iphone.

I’ve always liked to be able to tweak my computer and android offers so much configurability, I just love it! Also really like being able to kill all running programs and free memory with one stroke, rather than having to manually kill apps one by one (gah! such a PITA)...

I still have massive respect for the iphone though as it is really seamless out of the box and a nice clean interface, whereas android can at times need a little more tweaking to get it running smoothly.

I’ve been with Virgin mobile for around 6 years and never ever had a problem… Mint service smile

There is plenty of hardware it extend battery life to any mobile device (including headcams wink ). Even solar charges.

For iPhone there is mophie cases From $25 - $100 that double battery life. Both my parents use them on there phones.

I’m in te same boat trent. 4months left, In another month I can upgrade and in the mean time using a 3G. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a cheap 3Gs or 4 but they are generally $200 and $400. Even with a broken screen they are pricey!!
