Yeah my mother had the same concern when she was coming from a Nokia with a full keyboard to the touchscreen GS2 but even she picked it up pretty quickly.
The beauty of android is you can download a whole bunch of different keyboards with different keys/functions (some designed just for thumbs, ones where you dictate the message etc) so that certainly helps. Lots of people also fall in love with “swype” style typing which simply involves sliding your finger somewhere near the letter you want. It’s actually really easy and quick as the prediction is really accurate.
I don’t know much about this and I’ve hardly downloaded anything to my phone I have now. As far as smartphone use I only really use the net on it every now and then (google maps etc) or maybe fb or check emails. Most of the time data transfer is switched off as I find it sucks way too much battery life. A downloadable keyboard designed for thumbs sounds pretty good to me though. Can you get them for free?

The majority of apps on the market tend to come with “free/trial versions” you also get a 15 minute refund period for any paid purchases. Another option is to google “appname.apk” for an “extended trial” but that would be naughty!

I haven’t used it a whole lot on my phone but it comes in handy when you are using a tablet in bed. I’ve also had success with swiftkey, swype (included for free with the GS2), slideit and I generally find the stock keyboard to be pretty decent.
OMGz fanbois are everywhere. I’m not especially biased one way or the other. If I had to buy a new phone right now there’s no question it would android, however I will wait to see the new iPhone later this year. The main thing that bothers me about android is the fact that you are at the hardware manufacturers’ mercy when it comes to software upgrades. We have a dyed-in-the-wool Android fanboi at work and he still can’t get ICS to work properly on his SG2. I read somewhere that this “fragmentation” (having lots of little code branches in Android to support different hardware) is driving developers away from it. Will be interesting to see how this continues to pan out.

Haha yeah I get to geek out more on a snowboard forum than I do on tech forums! 
To counter that though I love the fact that there is a massive 3rd party rom community (xda forums anyone?) I haven’t been running a stock samsung rom on my phone since about 2 weeks of owning it. To be fair though ICS isn’t great on the GS2 at the moment it’s not a disaster but I prefer the very mature gingerbread based custom roms.
On my motorolla xoom I get a fantastic ICS experience.
If an android user wants the purest “google experience” then they would be best off buying whichever Nexus is out at the time (but you lose out on the most powerful hardware)
