Ahoy chaps and chapettes

As you know ive got my whole busé thing going on and at the moment im working out where i will get my tall hoods made.
Ideally I want to get made here in australia to make busé an Australian owned and made company BUT after receiving the quotes back to get them made im wondering if its going to be an excercise fraught with financial ruin.
So i put it to you good people of boardworld, how important is buying australian made to you? I know tall hoods arent everyones cup of tea but generally would you be willing to pay a fair bit more knowing that your purchase has been made within our shores or are you more inclined to purchase something made offshore thats cheaper??

thanks for your time

To me, and i dont care what anyone thinks of me, $$$ is king and i will go where i get the most value for said $$$. BUUUT if i have mates who make clothing (which i have a few) i will support them and buy theirs if i like the designs etc.

I have bought 99% of my snow gear from USA and will continue to do so as long as the price difference remains the same.
Same as clothes, i buy nearly all (except for my awesome Gary Buse’ gear) my clothes online form Europe/USA.

In terms of my stuff, having it made here is Australia is double what i can get it made in china for.
So say a hoodie costs $20 to make in china, having it made here costs $40, then if you decide to sell it wholesale to a retail outlet, you need to put a mark up on that making it say $70, and then the retail will double the wholesale to get their RRP making it $140. Would you spend 140 on a hoodie because it was made here where you could get a china made one for 80-90ish?

^^^ Thats in retail terms i mean, i can sell them from my website for the lesser price but getting a store to stock your stuff is a pretty big deal.

Sadly it is a fact of life the import AND export makes the world go round.

I will pay for things i really like but if there is too things side by side and the quality is the same of course i go for cheaper!

Most I have paid for a hoodie is about $100 at a retail store. Once you cross that threshold, you better be making something that will last me forever or have something super special about it. I.E. Waterproof / Extra warm come to mind.

Obviously if price wasn’t a factor it would be lovely to buy Australian but the simple fact is these days pricewise it’s rarely in the same ballpark.

I think what a lot of retailers (I’m looking at you Gerry Harvey) fail to acknowledge is that the internet has really enabled a Global Economy rather than an insulated local market. This gives consumers so much more choice on where/how they spend their money which I think is a fantastic thing. Instead of complaining about a 10% GST how about adjusting to new business practices and put pressure on importers/distributors to bring us closer in line with the rest of the world.

Now I know this isn’t the issue you are encountering which has more to do with labour costs in Australia vs China (and I think we can all agree it’s not feasible to reduce our minimum wage). In the end it really is a choice only you can make. If you have a strong moral standing/belief you could take a punt on Australian made. However in the end as much as consumers will applaud you for the decision it probably won’t be rewarded with many extra purchases and you scare away a lot of potential customers with the “premium” price.

lol i love the political view on here.

its simple if ppl can save money this day they will do what ever it takes just like what Deano says and i agree with him to a degree some things you can buy online and some you cant, i can use my self as example i will never buy lets say boot online any more coz its just hard to know if they will be good fit or not, but if it comes for jackets or pants i will buy online if i am saving big time ie; if i am buying same pants in Australia for 300 and online i can get them for 150 i am going online, yes i know its shit for australian retails but this days leaving the normal life aint cheap.

Ask yourself a few question lanox -

what do you do for a living?
then look at how much you get paid for doing your job
then look at how much a person in China would get paid to do your job

Would you do your job for $1 a day??

You would feel “ripped off” at that wage

that is part of the difference in price of products made in Oz

(apart from machinery expenses, rental of warehouse/shops, labour cost taxes etc etc etc)

caboose i am aware of what you are saying and like i stated in my first post I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO BUY FROM AUSTRALIA which i do any way but its hard to justify no meter how you look at it to pay $150 more when you know you don’t have to. i am sure of that one way or the other everyone has purchased they stuff from ONLINE.

i completely understand and i am the first one to say i would be more then happy to support AUSTRALIA PRODUCT if it was just little cheaper, however there is a good deals here in Australia just this year i have purchased board, bindings, bag and almost all my gear through STM coz they look after BOARDWORLD ppl and i was more then happy with the price.

but sorry if he is going to charge me 170 for the hoodie and its not water proof or as TJ said something really different that stands out i dont think i would be buying it.

wasn’t having a go Lanox, just stating a few things

we are paying a super inflated price for Chinese made clothing in oz, they are the reasons why

we would have to pay more for Oz made clothing

we have a higher standard of living, we live in an expensive country to live

are any of the surf brands still “made in oz” at all???

It seems to me that there is a greater chance that you will spend $40 on an Chinese made hoody that is thin, poorly made and won’t last long. Or you can spend a bit more and hopefully get something that is half decent, having said that if you are super hard on Quality control Trent, then you should be able to get stuff made to a high standard over there. The first BW hoodies we got were crap…..anyone know where those hoodies were actually made? I think they were printed on in OZ at least?

I noticed boardworld are supporting this http://www.facebook.com/BUYSNOWBOARDSINAUSTRALIA.
It seems like a mixed message to me, how can you say buy foreign boards from Australian shops (ie support the local store industry but not the local manufacturing industry) the logical end conclusion from that reasoning is that you should also buy Australian owned and made boards and hardware, however they arent saying that i.e the message they put out is support the stores but don’t worry about brands like chemical storm etc

I will say that they do make a good point about board prices in Australia coming down. I have seen plenty of boards in Australia on special at around the $300-400 mark at the moment.

caboose all good mate i didn’t take it as you where having a go at me, i just don’t want to come a cross as a person that would rather by online, then support local stores, coz that is not the case, but sometimes its hard to over look the price and the difference that you are saving.

but i am a sucker for buying even overpriced items so yeah.

but it kind of put me off from buying online after my boots situation etc so yeh i sold my old boots and went to STM and got my boots fitted from there opefully i will be happy with them.

I agree to some extent….why should you buy a burton board in Australia for $800 if you get the same board overseas for $500. There are no moral arguments about the place of manufacture in that scenario.

On a side note, Why do you say its aint easy any more? Australia has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world and is up there on quality of life?  I reckon there must have been harder times in the past! Granted that doesn’t really help the individual if they are struggling but for as long as I can remember everyone has been saying how hard times are…....
