Looking for a new board, suggestions pls :)

Hiya,

I’m looking for a new board and would love some suggestions raspberry

Currently I have an 09 Burton (sic) Un Inc 159 on Cartel ESTs. Find it nice but not enough flex/pop… great fun blasting down the hill but not enough fun on slower flatter stuff hunting for natural kickers etc. The slower stuff and a little bit of jibbing is what i’m trying to improve, still love a fast blast on steeps, but not really that into full on park. Previously had a very stiff feeling Ride antic, moved to the un inc for a bit more flex and because the ride was pretty short.

I’m ~182ish, size 10.5-11s. Wouldn’t mind keeping my cartels but no biggie to switch them. Biggest hassle is I have no local shop to speak of, only place that has anything has a relatively small range.

I’ve been looking at libtechs and gnu’s, and trying to figure out what EST based burtons might be a nice option. I’ll be hitting aussie snow this season and if i get lucky some japow next year, although really have no big deal picking up another board for pow :D. Outside chance I’ll get some free passes to europe through work :D

Any suggestions warmly welcome

s.

Hey soul,

Welcome to Boardworld. cool smile

Just so you know, Burton EST bindings will only work with a Burton board with “The Channel”.

That said, please have a read of this article I wrote on camber profiles: https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewthread/4119/

The best first step is understanding the different camber profiles and how they change the way the board rides. Have a read through and let us know which camber profile(s) seem appealing to you. From there we can help you narrow down the boards and bindings.

Check the other threads in this section from other people asking the exact same question, see what boards they nominate, what terrain they ride etc. get a shortlist of boards suggested from those threads. Then post them here and we can help you out.

hey soul!

The Uninc + Cartels is an awesome combination! :D

But getting back on point, again just in my opinion lib techs / gnus (same thing really) are over-rated.
I had a Gnu Park Pickle in 2010 (Same thing as Lib Tech Skate Banana) and heres the lowdown, its the heaviest board i have ridden for a 156cm size (its even heavier then my old 162’s), the magnetraction doesnt work any better then regular camber (although thats not the point because they put it on reverse camber boards) also the magtraction tends to SLOW YOU DOWN on the flatter stuff as it diggs in too hard, the pop is average and flex for me was around a 5 (medium stiffness).

I rode it for 2 days and sold it…. enough said lol havent ridden any of their newer stuff mainly cos ive been put off, but last year my mate had the Banana Magic (one of their top tier boards) and after only 10 days his base started to delaminate (google Banana Magic delaminte and youll see its a widespread problem)

So after seeing that i dont recommend them to anyone lol

My lib tech T.Rice has 55 days on it and still goin strong. The top sheet chipped a bit but that happens with every board. No signs of delamination or anything that will change the board’s performance. I love Lib and I don’t think they’re overrated.

Their graphics certainly are haha

I’m with Skip, love both my Libs, I think they suffer a little from the Burton style hate as they are one of the best selling board brands.  Mervin have one of the strongest teams in snowboarding, pretty much all my favourite guys ride for them or one of their affiliate brands so they must be doing something right.

dont get me wrong, im not saying lib tech/gnu suck balls lol they have some cool boards and to be honest the banana magic was pretty slick

i was just saying from my experience and my buds experience with lib/gnu i wouldn’t buy/recommend another one.

dw about the team, those guys are profesh, its their job to snowboard, if you gave them a lamar board they would still kill it lol
20% board / 80% rider

While I’m not a fan of the C2 MTX tribe also, when it comes to anythin, its really a personal thing that everyone has to work out for themselves!!!!!

That’s why demo days are awesome, but if ya can’t make things like that, then listenin to common traits of different brands and different profiles, then matchin this info up to what closest fits ya personal preferences, then more than likely to hit the nail on the head sooner!!!!!

I’m also not a big fan of most of the lib/gnu graphics either, but never ever letter this be the decidin factor in buyin ya next board!!!!! (Unless its got a wicked graphic that will make ya look really cool, or ya wanna hang it on the wall????? Then maybe, just maybe!!!!!)

If its POP that ya want, go stiff camber or a hybrid that has camber as its mainframe!!!!! ie camber that extends from the bindings to centre of the board!!!!! This will also be technically better for carvin/bombin!!!!!

If its a playful board that ya want to spin like a top on, then go for rocker or a hybrid that uses rocker as its mainframe!!!!! This will also be better for butters/jibs/boxes/rails etc!!!!!

If its somewhere in between then go for somethin with a flat base!!!!!

Thx all. I’ve already been skimming similar posts and read your post rider26 smile I guess I was just a bit lost still.

It really sucks having no local stores. I’m a bit scared of on mountains prices otherwise I’d hold out and try/buy on my next trip.

Yep I knew about Est+channel… If I get a non channel board I’ll be shopping for bindings.

I guess I was hoping for someone who might have a feel for an un inc compared to other boards. I find it hard to get good flat ground pop and feel its a bit stiff. Seems good blasting but I did have a couple moments hitting ice on windswept rises. I think the un inc is cambered medium to stiff? I had a couple runs on a 2010 (I think) skate banana and liked the looseness and flex/pop but definitely noticed it being a touch heavy?

I was very keen on a skate banana 156 at one point… Now Im just a bit confused. I think I want something a touch shorter than un inc, with a touch more flex and possible a hybrid (a) camber, but like I said its a bit confusing for me. My background is pretty full on kiteboarding… a kiteboard is just a snowboard with a shiteload of grip and inversed turn initiation. I tend towards a true twin because of this influence (switch riding comes “naturally”) but I have a dominant right foot so really like to be able to flick 180s fast in a pinch. Really love a looser surfy feel again due to surf based kiteboarding influence.

Anyone happen to know of any channelled Burton’s that might be worth a look? I had gnu riders choice c2btx on the list, and then a banana.

Once again thx

Hey mate,

How much do you weigh?

I know the Uninc very well. My main board here in Whistler is an Uninc 154 which I have been riding for 3 seasons now. I previously had an Uninc 152 for Australia which I well and truly trashed over a few seasons. That said, I can definitely help you compare the Uninc to different boards. Just to clear things up, the Uninc is a true twin, full camber, medium/stiff (7 on Burton’s flex scale). Personally I love the board for all-round shredding but I sometimes feel like riding something softer or with rocker for different reasons (jibbing, pow etc).

Rocker anywhere in the board is going to loosen up the ride; it will make turning quicker and easier. A softer board flex can also make things more fun and flatground tricks easier.

Considering you’re interested in hybrid camber profile A, that includes any Burton board with ‘Flying V’, Lib Tech boards with ‘C2’ or mixes thereof, Nitro’s ‘Gullwing’ etc.

In the Burton range, have a look at the Custom Flying V and the Process Flying V. Both these boards have the Flying V (hybrid A) profile. Both are going to be softer and more playful than your Uninc (Custom is a 5 on the flex scale, Process is a 3). Both are versatile and can be ridden anywhere. The Process is ‘twin like’ but still directional with a slightly setback stance (that doesn’t mean you can’t ride it centred).

In the Lib Tech range, have a look at the TRS 157. It has the C2 profile (type A hybrid camber profile), true twin, medium flex.

If full rocker interests you (Skate Banana is full rocker), you could also look at the Burton Joystick. This is one of my favourite full rockered boards on the market. Super fun to play around on. This would compare to the Skate Banana although they have their slight differences.

Additionally, I wouldn’t rule out a board like the YES Basic. Super versatile, true twin, soft/med flex, excellent value price-wise. It was a fan favourite at last year’s Shred. A few of our members went on to buy one. http://www.yesnowboard.com/products/boards/the-basic/

im 82-84kgs

i had a ride antic ~2010, think it was 154ish, found that super stiff and a little sketchy at speed. liked the shorter board. mainpeak is the only local place and their range is a bit limited, ill have a check in the next week or two to see what they have, at least i can eyeball some stuff

how does the custom x’s play into things, they seem to get a lot of hype

apart from being expensive as shit, have a mate who has a custom x and he loves it.

Check balmoral boards, they have a sale on at the moment

The Custom X is the opposite of what you’re asking for. It’s directional, fairly stiff, with a full camber profile.
