I just saw this and thought I would share. I am guessing the surfers on here would know more about him and do a better tribute than I can do.

More from SMH, seems it was a heart attack.
RIP
RIP surfe the heaven champ.
The greatest surfer ever, better than Slater. Even Slater acknowledges it.
There are few free surfers that are that good. As a pro surfer MP dominated everyone. As a free surfer no-one will ever come close, never ever.
Psychophrenia destroyed his surfing days. He continued to sit on the point at Kirra on days away from the institution watching the waves.
His biography will likely get a reprint, everyone should read it - very interesting insight into mental illness and the life of a surfer in the 70’s. Interesting to see what it would be like to have no-one as good as you are. To understand how surfing keeps surfers sane.
Every barrel that rolls through Kirra will hold his spirit, everyone that gets a barrel there will be sharing it with Michael.
MP is now at peace, his torture is over, for the rest of eternity he will exist in surfer heaven - Kirra’s empty tubes.
Long live the memory of the greatest man to surf - MP
Lovely words Spaz!
