well in aussie snow i dont see the point in wearing one. you will get too hot 99% of the time unless your in a blizzard/cold snap.

And if you layer under it you will get way too hot to quick.

yeah i’m wondering about that.  when you guys say “hoodie” do you mean a regular cotton hoodie or some high-tech thing?

i wear a normal hoodie, most of the time its fine, there will be the odd occasion where it gets wet due to me eating shit but most of the time its fine. But when it does get wet, man it sucks!

Yeah I totally agree, and I don’t wear an insulated jacket either.  It’s just that when you walk into snow shop here all you see is racks and racks of them.

I have always worn an insulated Jacket with a t-shirt underneath, good for the top of the mountain, rain and snow. But if the sun is out and there is no cool wind in Australia, it gets really hot and I usually end up riding with it open. I am liking the idea of a shell for the sunny and warm days.

I wear my normal (cotton) hoodie mostly for fashion. If it gets wet I take it off but that never happens b/c I never fall wink the hood keeps the space on the back of my neck, between my helmet and jacket protected.

I like a bandana to protect my face on the chair and in blizzards..

Can’t do fleece - they are way to hot for me, even my sleevless.

My 4square jacket is insulated 15k. To much for Australia on most days.

Pants 10K. In Thredbo you have to have very waterproof pants b/c of the chairlifts dripping water. And Thredbo is wetter.

Good timing for this thread as I’ve been looking into my outerwear options as well.

Currently I have a Sessions kreuger jacket which is really nice but insulated. I found even in Japan (although I did have unseasonably warm conditions) I was sweating it up with just a tshirt with the vents open.

I’ve been thinking about purchasing another jacket that I won’t heat up as quickly in. Originally I was looking at picking up something like a softshell hoodie but I’m now leaning towards spending a little extra and buying a shell jacket. Am I correct in presuming it would be significantly cooler than my insulated sessions jacket or am I best off looking into the softshell hoodie option?

I guess I’m a little concerned my nice sessions jacket will become redundant after only a few weeks of wear but I also don’t really want to have to lug around two jackets with me when I travel.

Cheers

a shell is just that, a shell with no insulation so yeh it will be cooler than a hoodie. a hoodie is in a way insulated as it is thick material.

Depends on the materials used in either garment, but there is no way that a “DryRide” style hood will be any good when the weather gets white!!!!!

Get a hard shell man! You’re insulated jacket will be great for those windy cold days and the shell is better for slightly warmer days.

I have a puffer and a shell. Though I only really wore the puffer in Canada as it is too wet down here. I still prefer it over the shell - it’s just too hot some days.

My jacket has no insulation, it’s a Fila Keystone resort jacket, too big but whatevs, and while i wore layers with it in CO, never in CA/NV, definately never in Oz- it just doesn’t seem to get cold enough here. But I like the waterproofness.  also my wife thinks i look like a tard in it.. most likely true.  But find something that works for you, what’s the value?!
