I thought his slopestyle run was styleless and robotic. He may as well have avoided the rails altogether, as he looked like he was just going through the motions because he had to.
Now that he’s a serious contender for Olympic gold in both freestyle disciplines, snowboarding NEEDS Shaun White to give back to the sport that’s made him rich and famous - and finally stand up to the FIS/IOC.
I agree with you but this cause needs the support of ALL competing snowboarders, not just Shaun.
Very true - however as far as the IOC are concerned, Shaun White is all that matters.
To put it another way, given the choice between Shaun White boycotting the Olympics and every other top snowboarder boycotting the Olympics, the IOC would choose the latter. That’s why the sport of snowboarding REALLY needs his support in this matter.
I wonder what his sponsors tell him. You think they encourage him one way or the other? Burton being so pro snowboarding, you would think they would be pushing for him to make a stand. On the other hand, they probably want a third Olympic gold medal.
But that’s the thing about the Olympics - the (unofficial) sponsors get bugger all out of it! Burton will probably do the uniforms (regardless of whether SW is there or not), and other than that, the most they can hope for is footage of their base graphics. It’s (STRICTLY enforced) IOC regulation that unofficial sponsors’ logos are NOT to be seen. Look at goggle straps, for example - any logo over a certain size gets covered up with black gaffer tape. Target and Red Bull (for example) won’t get any exposure out of the Olympics directly - so the most they can hope for is to ride the wave if he wins.
If anything, Shaun’s putting bucks ahead of bros is badly hurting his image within snowboarding’s core demographic - so with a rapidly declining core profile, the most he can hope for (if he continues on his current path) is a spike in scooter sales, and a few new ranges of SW bed sheet collections at Target.
Burton stands to make shitloads off Shaun winnin gold, as they would have in the past!!!!!
The Olympics is the tool that takes the name (Shaun White) into the lounge rooms of everyday people!!!!!
If these everyday people decide to take up the sport of snowboarding, then Burton’s backing pays off big time!!!!!
Kids will look to see what the best use, then odds are they will use this brand throughout their days of their new chosen sport!!!!!
Shaun White’s an awesome rider, but he’ll never ever be revered in the same manner as Terje Håkonsen or Craig Kelly - because they have/had the kind of credibility that Shaun White just can’t buy, no matter how many millions he makes. Jake Burton fully supported the (non selling out) actions of both Terje and Craig, and I’d be really surprised if he doesn’t cringe at all the hate that Shaun’s been bringing on himself lately. Notice how Burton don’t push SW anywhere near as much as they used to?
The non-snowboarding “everyday people” may only know of Shaun White, but kids who actually ride rely on peer group approval for major purchases - and that takes ‘The White Collection’ largely out of the picture these days. That mainly leaves the purchasing of SW signatured products to parents and grandparents buying snowboard-related presents for their kids and grandkids. Oh, and skiers.
Besides, the “everyday people” watching the Olympics align SW more with brands like Red Bull and Target these days.
The Shaun White Collection is just a part of the persona that is the Shaun White Juganaught!!!!!

Just like Quicksilver sell product through the Kelly Slater phenomenon, even when Kelly is not the best surfer in the world to watch, and not the most popular among his peers, he brings in the dollars via the mainstream public that gets caught up in the “Surfer Lifestyle”, because he has consistently won where it counts!!!!! The public eye!!!!!

Considering the years he’s been in the public eye, the hating on SW thing is only fairly recent.
Sure, he used to bring in the big bucks for Burton - just not as much anymore. More Burton Juicewagon boards will be sold off the back of Terje riding one in Supernatural, than SW pro model boards will be sold off the back of the Olympics. Kazu will sell heaps more boards for Burton than SW, and bringing John Jackson on board is an indication they needed a boost in their core credibility factor.
Still, no matter how much of a narcissistic freak Michael Jackson became, he always had fans. So will Shaun White.

I completely agree. Grrrrrr. I hate when riders do this. If you only want to hit jumps then compete in big air.
I’m not a Shaun White hater like a lot of people. But if your going to give him Slopestyle and Halfpipe Gold then he better freaking earn it!
