Glad I could help. Going by what you have mentioned I would recommend purchasing something like a WDTV Live which is a simple to use network media player (so simple even my parents can use it!) It will have output options for an older TV but future expandability to a new tv with HDMI. It will also easily handle 1080p bluray rips and a variety of different codecs.
It won’t be as good as a dedicated HTPC when it comes to things like metadata, archiving, recording etc but will make playback incredibly simple which is what you want.
