Now the old stuff that i watched previously on the USB works but not the new stuff. It can’t ‘see’ it

Without much info to work with I’ll give you a couple of things to check.

First off this new stuff that isn’t working. Was it acquired recently? The reason I ask is there has been some changes in “scene” releases recently with a much stronger push towards x264 encoding vs xvid for lower quality files. Just because a file ends with the same extension such as .avi doesn’t mean it’s the same. DVD players with “media playback” are notoriously horrible when it comes to codec compatibility. A really simple way to confirm if the files have a different encoding method to your old stuff is to check a couple of files with mediainfo http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en this program will tell you exactly what encoding methods were used inside the video container. You can also confirm the files aren’t corrupt by playing them back on your pc using a program such as VLC

Now if the files haven’t changed I’m not really sure where you could be going wrong. I would recommend formatting a spare usb in a universally compatible format i.e fat32 and copy one old and one new file over and check what your player detects.

Failing all that if you regularly watch these kinds of videos there are much better ways to do it than a dvd player i.e a network media player (the cheap easy option) or a HTPC (more complicated but best way)

yep I was just gonna say the bit about the encoding being different despite the .avi extension being the same.

Thanks everyone. That actually makes sense!!! Def something like that could have happenewd whilst I was in japan.

As for a better setup, yeah would love a better system but would love someone (hint hint TJ   to set it up for me when I get a better TV which hopfully the birthday fairy will bring.

I do not watch ‘live’ TV anymore so yeah I watch a lot of these types of files.
