What I just wrote on Hotham’s Facebook page:

I’m curious about this t-shirt design contest you’ve got going on. Basically, you want people to submit their Hotham-related designs for free, then you’ll choose the best and make money from it, giving none back to the designer? That about sum it up?

Hotham’s reply:

Shame you see it like that Charles. It’s a great opportunity for someone with hidden talents to shine or for a young designer to get their designs in print… good for the CV. oh well!

My reply:

So the last time you had a toothache, did you ask a lot of dentists to look at it for free, while you deliberated over who was the best? Then didn’t even pay the one you chose?

The last time your car broke down, did you ask a lot of mechanics to look at it for free, while you deliberated over who was the best? Then didn’t even pay the one you chose?

The last time you were hungry, did you sample heaps of free food until you decided what you liked the most, then ate it without paying for it?

So WHY deliberately undervalue the work designers do???

How about I come to Hotham and spend a week or so sampling accommodation, food, and chairlifts, just to see which ones I prefer, then once I’ve chosen my favourite, continue to use it without paying for it. Sound fair to you?

Hotham’s line, “It’s a great opportunity for someone with hidden talents to shine or for a young designer to get their designs in print… good for the CV”, or words to that effect, has been used for many years by people looking to exploit the eagerness of young creative types looking to break into the highly competitive world of professional design. It really makes you wonder why it is, that their time and effort is considered by some to be worth so much less than that of those wishing to work in other industries?

If hotham was offering a free season pass to the winner, I’d have no problem with this… but this just reminds me of friends of friends wanting computer fixes for free cause they sort of know me…. or people at work bringing in home PC’s for help. They get, ” sorry I’m real busy at work but ill stay late and fix it for you for some money or a case of beer. Or you know I could ask you to engineer me a new house? That’s your job right?”

Hotham should sack whoever in their media department is handling this - because it’s a prime example of how NOT to use social media to your advantage.

It’s blatantly obvious that the Hotham marketing person/people don’t give a crap about engaging in this type of exploitation, and their dismissive replies have dug an even deeper hole for Hotham. I just wrote this on their Facebook page:

No worries. Seeing as how you’ve got no problem with this kind of exploitation, we’ll all come to Hotham and spend a week or so sampling accommodation, food, and chairlifts, just to see which ones we prefer, then once we’ve chosen our favourites, we’ll continue to use them without paying for them. Of course, the “winners” are welcome to brag about their “win” to anyone they like - and maybe, just maybe, we’ll offer a yet to be determined, “apropriate prize” as well. Nice, I’m looking forward to it.

We should get as many people as possible over the next few days to write something similar on Hotham’s Facebook page. Maybe:

Hey Hotham, I heard a rumor people can come and use your accommodation, food, and chairlifts for free, then give a free t-shirt to the one they like the best! That right?

or

Hey Hotham, we’re having this “competition” where people can come and use all your facilities for free. It’s an awesome deal for you guys, because the “winners” can brag about it in their “portfolios”, and we might even offer a “prize”. Maybe.

Feel free to cut & paste, or reword to suit yourself.

I think this would be better chucky:

“Hey Hotham, I’m running a competition for snowfields where they can invite me to use their facilities and I will choose the best one and use it. Would you like to enter?”
