Was an amazing day. I got some photos and some sunburn lol. Will post a bit later…
Such an awesome day. I couldn’t believe how huge this event was.
So much awesome talent from 3 different generations.
I don’t know if you guys saw the best trick comp at the end but Sluggo landed a backflip second try! And won best trick - $3000
I’ll post more tomorrow, I’ve got loads of pics, hope they do it justice.
*Also props to our 2 young skaters - Noah and Ryan. They were both sporting BW Tees and both skated better than some of the adults lol
16-YEAR-OLD BRAZILIAN TAKES OUT 3RD CONSECUTIVE SKATEBOARDING TITLE AT BONDI
February 25, 2012. Bondi Beach (AUSTRALIA).
Thousands of people today crowded beachfront grandstands to watch the world’s best skateboarders compete in the eighth annual Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi 2012.
Sixteen-year-old professional skateboarder Pedro Barros (BRAZIL) took out his third consecutive Pro Title after a heated final that saw him using every inch of the bowl at full-throttle speed, busting everything from head-high stalefish 540s, to technical lip trickery like alley-oop frontside 50-50s around the tight corner, just beating an impressive Bucky Lasek (USA) and Rune Glifberg (DEN). Competition was equally fierce in the Masters Division with an epic display of skateboarding genius. Legendary skateboarder Steve Caballero (USA) wowed the crowd with his effortless style, experienced consistency and signature frontside inverts, fingerflip Indys and of course his original Caballerial spins that saw him take home his fifth consecutive Masters Title at the event.
Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi is one of skateboarding’s biggest concrete bowl events and this year’s event included an unprecedented prize purse of $80,000 AUD ($85,000 USD).
Today’s action was watched by tens of thousands of people around the world via a global webcast from http://www.bowlarama.com.au, live Fuel TV broadcast and Vans Live 2.0 App. While the event grows every year it prides itself on being an event for skateboarders, by skateboarders.
“The prize purse has increased dramatically this year and we feel we have set a precedent for other competitions. Professional skateboarders put their lives on the line at these events so we feel they should be justly rewarded. When the riders are stoked they skate better and when that happens the crowd gets the show of their lives. That was well and truly the case today.” – Chad Ford, Frontside Events director.
For amateur skateboarders the Dew AM Jam saw Australia’s top Under 18 bowl riders invited to skate alongside the Pro’s. In the 12 months since the inaugural Dew AM Jam at Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi 2011, Australia’s top Under 18 bowl riders showed the world it will soon see more Australians represented at the top international levels in bowl skateboarding with the likes of 13-year-old Lachie Aboott and 14-year-old Jakob Robinson ripping up the bowl. Aussie World Vert Champ Renton Millar was stoked to see his group of handpicked groms rip it up at the event.
“In the year since we started searching for Dew AM Jam skaters, I have been blown away by how many more skaters there are and the bag of tricks they all are claiming under their belts. No doubt the young Aussies are inspired by the new, young wave of international bowl riders and they are showing they want to stand up alongside them in the next couple of years with a view to taking out the Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi title,” says Millar.
After eight years Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi continues to wow a growing audience; “We are proud to have been involved with this event from its inception eight years ago. Each year we make a real effort to increase the prize money and elevate the event for the benefit of both skateboarders and spectators. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Steve Caballero’s Half Cab shoe, so to have him win the Masters is particularly memorable. It’s an incredible result to have Pedro win the Pro’s too.” – Deena Colman, Vans Australia Marketing Manager.

Pedro attempted a Misty Flip Kickflip? Crazy…
Yes, Bucky was throwing down. All style. He killed it.
Jimmy Beck represented Australia super well!
I asked Pedro what his fav trick to see thrown in the bowl was - Misty Flip Kick was the reply.
When asked what it would take to get the hattrick he said he had to outdo himself and push it further.
Which he did…
What did he say when you asked if he could do a 540 in the tight corner?
The Boardworld edit will be coming soon. Lots of footage to go through but you know the edit will be sick.
Good to hear that Noah and Ryan were gettin into it!!!!!
Did Lewis enter this time?????

I do mwahahaha
renton didnt compete?
I apologize for the pics folks. I only had my little camera with me and you can’t get up close unless your a pro photographer. So the skaters got lost in the crowd for a lot of the pics.
But here are some of the better pics I snapped. To be honest I had to put down the camera and just watch most of the time, it was too damn good to watch through a view finder.

Eddie El Gato (49 Years Old) had the most stylish Rock to Fakies in the business and also showed us his signature reverts.

The big dog Steve Cabalero board sliding through the corner. He was so smooth and worked every last inch of the pool to claim his 5th straight Masters Title.
Pedro won the Pros making that his 3rd straight win followed SO closely by Bucky Lasek in 2nd who had some trouble in the heats but stepped up big time in the finals. And Rune Glifberg got 3rd for huge airs out of the back wall.
A mention definitely deserves to go to our own Jimmy Beck with a very well earned 4th place.
Oh and TJ didn’t have a good time…

ROLL IN - EPISODES 5 & 6
Love n Guts, the annual skater created art show at the Vans Bowl-a-Rama Bondi is back again and this years theme ‘Empty Culture’ showcases some amazing work by Steve Caballero, Pat Ngoho, Dean Tirkot, Chad Ford and Sasha Steinhorst.
The Vans Bowl-a-Rama Bondi was wrapped up for another year! From the Art Shows, the Parties and an amazing day of skateboarding, the 2012 Vans Bowl-a-Rama Bondi will go down in the history books with Steve Caballero winning his 5th consecutive Masters title and Pedro Barros winning his 3rd consecutive Pro title.
Here are some of the better photos I got. Obviously the pro photos are better as my phone was playing up and the zoom wouldnt work
This kid below was 14 from Hawaii and I thought was one of the more exciting competitors… but he had a few falls and came 9th and didn’t get a chance in the finals.
From where we were sitting, it was hard to get a good view… here is a grind. He was wearing a cowboy hat and no pads… crazy!
Overall a fantastic day. Would go again next year!
Just wanted to say a super quick thanks (as I’m at work at the moment). I had an absolute BLAST on Saturday. It was a HUGE day as I turned up at 9am and stayed until after the pros finals. WOW. And again WOW. The skating was phenomenal, it really was. I thought they all just ripped / shredded / tore it up so much. I was just exhausted yesterday from all the awesome (hence why I’m only thanking you now).
Once again I REALLY appreciate the VIP ticket. Can’t wait for next year when I interview all those skaters
With any luck today I’m off to meet a friend and Lizzie Armanto (#1 female bowl rider) for a skate – fingers crossed it happens. If it does maybe I’ll put something on the ladies of skateboarding forum I see there.
And once more THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Also, Jack Fardell (cowboy hat) is one of my new faves. I saw him compete in Newcastle ABC comp and he was such an awesome skater. Best bit is, if he loses that cowboy hat mid run he just continues with the next trick and then when he skates past, picks up his hat and puts it on his head again – that guy is too cool for school.
Oh and not being able to watch on TV, perhaps those that did can say – did you think Steve and Nicky deserved 1 and 2 over Mik Mulhall? I thought Mik just shredded it completely – but then I may just be overly impressed with air tricks LOL. I did think Cab used the bowl more and possibly displayed a greater range of tricks but couldn’t see all.
Hey Squeals
I didn’t see you out there, but I guess there were a lot of people there. That’s rad that you get to skate with Lizzie Armanto. I just checked out one of her vids - She rips!
Jack Fardell is definitely gnarly, he skates so aggressively. That 540 disaster that he did in the heats was one of the best tricks all day for sure. I wish he did it in the finals too.
