BATTLE FOR THE TITLE!

International skateboarding legend and teen prodigy hit Australian shores with something to prove.

Action sports fans all over the world are gearing up to witness one of the biggest skateboarding legends of all time; Steve Caballero (US) & one of the most heralded teen prodigies Pedro Barros (BRAZIL) battle it out to defend their respective titles at one of skateboarding’s biggest professional bowl contests and week of cultural festivals in Australasia, Vans Bowl-A-Rama™ Bondi 2012.

Original Bones Brigade member Steve Caballero will be defending his fifth Masters title on Saturday the 25th of February, against the backdrop of one of Sydney’s most iconic beaches, Bondi, in a competition that has hosted him four times previously. Cab is out to prove yet again, that this title and a share of $80,000, one of the biggest prize purses yet, belongs to him.

“Steve Caballero has been pro for over 30 years and he has been at the top of professional skateboarding the whole time. There are not many, if any, professional athletes in any sport that can say that. Having a skater of his stature come back this year to compete for his 5th title in a row is a great honour for us and a fantastic opportunity for everyone who has ever been a fan of his and skateboarding.” Frontside Events director – Chad Ford.

Also vying for a large piece of the overall prize purse is Brazilian Pedro Barros. This 16-year-old continues to beat some of the world’s best pool skaters, since winning the Pro-Tec Pool Party in May 2011 as well as the Vans Bowl-A-Rama™ Bondi and Bowl-A-Rama™ Wellington. He finished 2011 as the #1 bowl skater on the World Cup Skateboarding series and has something big to prove to riders who are almost double his age.

Other confirmed riders competing on the day include Bucky Lasek, Rune Glifberg, Sam Beckett & Pat Ngoho. For the first time ever there will also be Australian wild card entries who earned their spot at the newly launched Hurley Australian Bowl-riders competition (ABC™) hosted at Bar Beach Empire Skate in Newcastle over the Australia Day long weekend.

“We have worked very hard to ensure that Australia has a place on the international stage with Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi and now we are there we want to ensure that it works hard for Australian skaters. We now have a clear pathway for Australian riders to literally come from nowhere and earn their way onto the international tour and make a living by qualifying through Hurley ABC and going on to compete at Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi.” Frontside Events director – Chad Ford.

Officially sanctioned by the World Cup Skateboarding, Vans Bowl-A-Rama™ Bondi celebrates the culture of skateboarding by offering a week of festivities in the lead up to the competition on the Saturday. All listed side events are open to the public, so for your chance to get amongst the action and rub shoulders with the biggest skateboarding talent in the world, save the date for Vans Bowl-A-Rama™ 2012!

LOVE AND GUTS ART SHOW

In collaboration with VANS BOWL-A-RAMA™, Love and Guts will be hosting an art exhibition at the Beach Road Hotel on Friday, February 24th.

Love and Guts has joined forces with the official VANS BOWL-A-RAMA™ Festival on the shores of Bondi Beach, to bring art, culture, and professional skateboarding to Sydney. As Steve Caballero fights to defend his 5th title, from Australian, Corbin Harris, and Brazilian, Pedro Barros, Love and Guts will be hosting an art exhibition at the Beach Road Hotel to promote the local skate scene and artistic culture before Saturday’s big event.

In an effort to best display the artwork, the venue has been changed from Bucklers Canteen to the more accommodating, Beach Road Hotel. The art show will be held on Friday, February 24th, starting at 5:00pm and ending at 9:00pm, at which time the afterparty will commence upstairs.

Love and Guts began when art enthusiasts, Steve Olson, Lance Mountain, and Pat Ngoho combined forces to create a collective of art and skateboarding. Beginning with a series of smaller exhibitions in the States in 2007, the collective has gained popularity and moved to an international platform.

Joining up with Oakley, the collective has made an international imprint and artwork from all over the world can now be seen at Love and Guts exhibition, Empty Culture.

The discovery of the backyard swimming pool was a milestone in the progression of skateboarding, and the boys at Love and Guts have created an exhibition solely documenting the feat that pushed skateboarding into a new frontier.

Heat spells and droughts are a natural occurrence in sunny California, but it was an absurdly long drought in the early 70’s that forced home-owners to empty pools and fill skateboarder’s minds with creativity and a desire to push physics to the test with only their skateboarders and seemingly endless imagination.

Moving into the skateboarding that we think of today, its obvious that pools are the archetype that inspires skatepark design, contests and progression, as we know it.

In succession with VANS BOWL-A-RAMA™, Love and Guts has established this art exhibition to promote the pursuit of Backyard Pool Skating and the culture that it entails. Love and Guts will attempt to pay homage to this accidental marriage between skateboarders and the backyard pool, as artists express their ideas and creativity through this matchless channel.

Save the date for Love and Guts art exhibition, Empty Culture, at the Beach Road Hotel, in partnership with the official VANS BOWL-A-RAMA™ festival, and become part of the family!

Hell yeah I’ll be there!
I’ll be watching for that promo too. I wouldn’t say no to having a drink with those guys!

Also… how good is this Pedro kid! I saw him for the first time at the Big Day Out. There were loads of awesome skaters but he was the only skater comparable to Tony Hawk. And he was even doing shit that no one else was.
