Rider’s Blog: Day 42

(This blog post is from yesterday).

I really need a day like this. Woke up to 22cm of new snow overnight. Michelle woke me up early and I was down at Creekside before the lifts opened. Being a busy weekend, the lift lines were bad right from the start, but I hustled my way through the Creekside Gondola line fairly efficiently (only got told off once haha).

Went up Red Chair and while the alpine was still going to be shut for a while, I bombed a run through the trees to Emerald Chair, as I figured that’s where the line would be the smallest at the current time. The run was pretty sweet, lots of pow everywhere. Emerald Chair line wasn’t too bad, although by the time I got to the front, it was backed up considerably and I decided not to ride down to Emerald or Red again.

Finney being the awesome dude he is, shot me a text saying the t-bars had opened. I went straight over but couldn’t be bothered waiting in line. i then looked over to Peak Chair and there were only a few people in line. That’s all I wanted to ride anyway and I was more than happy to wait in line listening to music. So I got in line, third chiar from the front, and waited for about an hour. I was so stoked to be right up the front on such a busy day, the time actually flew. By the time the chair opened, the line was huge!

Finally the chair opened and I was literally the first person down Whistler Bowl. It was such a surreal feeling being in Whistler bowl, fresh powder everywhere, looking back and not seeing one person in sight. Shale Slope looked a bit wind blown, so I decided to keep going over the backside. I kept going along the ridge and dropped down into the bowl just below VD trees. Again I was the first person down there. Just an awesome run.

Bumped into Paul Morgan at Red Chair lineup and we decided to go up Peak and hit Million Dollar Ridge. Great call. The snow was deep and untouched. Paul is such a ripper also. You might recognise the name from the high level riding articles on Boardworld. He is a trainer here in Whistler. Anyway, riding with Paul always brings awesome lines and pushes me to ride my best. Awesome run and I was sweating hard by the bottom. My GoPro battery ran out somewhere near the top of this run but I think I got some usable footage.

From there I caught up with Skip aka Rico outside the Roundhouse. We swapped boards for a run and rode down to Red. The lift lines had died down considerably by now. We went back up to Peak and did a sweet run through Bagel Bowl, which runs next to West bowl. We found some really nice snow and rode back down to Red. Went back up and rode down to Garb. I realised my legs weren’t going to last much longer, so I went up Garb and rode home. Got home at 2:30pm after riding without a break. Truly a sick day on the mountain! Hopefully I’ll get an edit together in the coming days.

All photos taken with the GoPro.

Is it on?
