I want to stay for a few days after the 15/16th weekend | 0 |
oh yeah and 7 days… :D
- travel time each day is costly. = 14hrs throughout the 7 days. Those 2hrs/day is a big chunk of your energy and holiday.
It’s actually only 35-40 minutes to Perisher from The Station, or 20 minutes to the Skitube. The Skitube takes 10 minutes to get to Perisher, or 20 minutes to get to Blue Cow. That’s anywhere between 60 - 80 minutes per day, or 7 - 9.3 hours over 7 days. That’s nothing - you’d easily spend that dicking around anyway.
When compared to the 12 hours it takes to drive there and back from central Sydney, it doesn’t look too bad at all. So staying on snow even for 7 days actually only saves you less than 50% of your overall driving time - at MUCH more than twice the cost.
Look at Warren, FastEddie and Fatima last year, on at least 2 occasions they made the weekend trip only to have shocking snow or the resort closed!!!
The risk of that happening is exactly the same for pre-booking on-snow accommodation. Probably more so - because you’re then stuck there.
- $6/day . . .
It’s all relative.
If you choose to stay in Jindy, that same money will buy you (for example) a new snowboard, a season pass, or a flight to Japan.
maximising snow time is surely benefitted by staying on snow.
It’s just the opposite.
Money is a finite resource. That $6/day isn’t ‘extra’ money that magically appears out of thin air - it’s simply money which factors into an overall budget, just like all the rest. The less money you spend on one snow trip, the more you have to spend on another - which equates to more riding days overall.
Time-wise, you can easily still ride first chair to last call if that’s your deal - where you stay barely factors into it. The only difference to riding time with staying off-snow is you’ve got to wake up a little earlier. Breakfast on the go - either in the car or on the Skitube, and the same goes for getting your snow gear on. No biggy at all.
At the end of the day, you’re going to relax with a beer anyway - and you can just as easily do that in the back seat of a car or on the Skitube, while you admire your brand new board or plan that Japan trip.
personally i agree with spaz it is kind of pointless staying 40 to 45 min away from the area yo will be traveling every day to . . .
You probably want to avoid riding in New Zealand then. That’s standard practice over there.

That’s my number 1 reason for not havin been to NZ yet!!!!!
. . . i think ppl should stop trying to justify what is better and what is not, at the end is a personal decision/what they can afford and what they cant.
It’s a no-contest, anyway. Of course on-snow accommodation is “better”.
BUT, once you factor in time and money, the scales start tipping toward off-snow accommodation. It’s a balance between available time and available funds.
Then, for a lot of people, off-snow accommodation becomes a much “better option”.
2 nights weekend @ Sundeck + 1 =
There’s a few factors weighing in for me…
1. All the demo equipment. It’s going to be much easier, for me anyway, to be on the snow at Perisher (even though I did originally want to stay at the Station). I know what a big job it was running all the demo boards/bindings last year. It’s going to be much easier for people to swap and grab gear on the snow at Perisher, rather than coming to my room in the morning at the Station etc. I would then have to drive back all the boards for people not staying at the Station. Totally stoked to run the demo again, which will hopefully be bigger and better than last year, but I need to be realistic about the logistics of it all.
2. Going on last season’s Shred, drinking was a big theme for most the evenings, and even during the day. If (when) we have a big night, surely some of the drinkers will be over the limit in the morning. I know they have RBTs regularly to and from Jindabyne. I would hate for someone to be pulled up for being over the limit in the morning. This has happened to instructors many times in the morning, driving to work from Jindy. Just something to think about. Those driving in the mornings need to be responsible about their intake the night before. Totally do-able, but it’s important to think about.
At the end of the day, price is an important consideration, which is why there are two options. It really is inevitable that there will be a split in where we stay. I personally think that’s fine, and a somewhat even split is even desirable. We have younger crew, students, those travelling elsewhere later in the year, coming to the Shred - and the cost is very important. We need to understand and respect that. If we have a fairly even split, there’s going to be a solid crew to hang out with no matter where you are. And there will be joint activities (SHREDDING for example) every day! So no one is going to feel left out. Those staying in Jindy are going to have a great time, and those staying in Perisher are going to have a great time. There really is no point in giving anyone a hard time over their preference. It’s all about being down at the snow at the same time and having an awesome time together.
Just my opinion. Carry on.
Also Mizu, I should be able to organise a venue of some description for trivia night etc. I wouldn’t worry too much about that.
agreed, Jez! well put.

Cool beans!!!!! The little get together’s were heaps of fun at the last one!!!!!
Must resist competing with Eddie. (unless I begin training now)
I started doing push ups last night haha
. . . you could always just split the friday/sat night ‘afterski’ between each place…say friday everyone meet up at sundeck and sat everyone at the station.
Great idea.
Apré events - Friday@Sundeck - Saturday@Station - with everything else mid-week at Sundeck? Of maybe one night mid-week crawling the bars/clubs in Jindy?

Hopefully not with that giant teddy!!!!!
I am going to buy a giant teddy like that just to take to the shred. He can be our mascot
Hi Jez and indeed everybody, apologies for seeming like a blow-in, but I’m working 12+ hour days 6 days a week at the moment so my BW time is limited.
I voted for Sundeck probably 3 nights just because I haven’t stayed on-snow before so I’m really looking forward to it.
