1st layer: second skin (queshua)
2nd layer: fleece (200g, queshua)
3rd layer: burton poacher jacket (5000mm)
Is this clothing warm between 5F to 10F (-20C to -10C)? Or I have to buy something better?
I’m going to snowboard at Tignes this week..
Tell your experiencies, please.
Hey persona, welcome to Boardworld.
Firstly, everyone has a different tolerance to the cold. Some people run warmer, others feel the cold more.
Anyway, first layer, 200g fleece, plus the Poacher jacket (which has insulation to it), might be fine in -10C or more.
Personally, I can wear a first layer, midweight fleece, and a shell jacket, in anything up to about -12C before I start getting too cold. If it gets colder, I will either upgrade to a warmer fleece layer, or sometimes I might just grab my puffy jacket and wear it with a first layer only (depending on the temperature).
The advice I would give you… Give it a go. It might work fine in all the conditions you get at Tignes. You might not even get -20C temps. Use the gear you have and try to make it work. If you experience super cold temperatures and you’re too cold, invest in a thicker fleece layer.
Let me know if you have any questions.
i get way too hot too easy, so layering like you are is good cause you can adjust to suit.
I have a mate who bought a big, heavy warm puffy jacket that is useless in Aus as it is wayyyyy too hot
Haha…
I wont even tell you what my layering is….
Way more than anything suggested above!
I’m along the same lines as deano here, I run hot in both temperature and appearance!!!!!
Thermals, T-Shirt, Jacket and pants!!!!! The only thing different that I wear as compared to milder days is a face mask, because exposed skin is the areas that feel those cold temps!!!!! The activity of boardin should keep ya warm!!!!!
Good base layers that wick away moisture is the number one thing imho!!!!! As if ya get wet or even slightly damp from sweatin, that is what inevitably gets the chill crankin!!!!!
And welcome to Boardworld, persona!!!!!
Onions have layers…
Are you calling me an onion deano??
The only thing different that I wear as compared to milder days is a face mask. . .
Which, let’s face it - when it comes to Mizu, is best for all concerned.

negative, i was quoting shrek.
I can call you an onion if you want me to?

I’ll bring my spare one for you when we go to the Shred this year!!!!!
I got your quote, deano!
In Japan, I wear a thermal, then merino base layer thing with a hood and then my down jacket. Never been cold. Hood thing then helmet works a treat. Helmet is brilliant for when it is real cold. Yesterday was -15 with windchill -35 and I wasn’t cold. Feet were a bit cold but that was it. For northern winter trips i always take my down jacket for cold days and Burton jacket/shell for warmer ones. Always wear a face mask. Even when it is hot, to protect from sun. Skins and Burton pants down below.
Bump for Whistler conditions!
Been looking at some Burton jackets to pair up with a basic first layer plus a merino fleece (got a 200 & 260 if needed).
Seems like a lot of you like the Stagger, which was one of my choices: https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewthread/3447/
Also another mid weight, the Highland. Anyone tried one of these?
Finally the LZ Down. Will this get too warm? I have a feeling that on a super cold and windy day in Whistler, this would be a dream to have on but most of the time it would be too warm?
You don’t want a down jacket for Whistler. Maybe on the super cold days but that’s only like 20% of the time.
Your best best is a Gore-tex shell. Then you just layer accordingly. Get some first layers, a fleece, a Gore-tex shell - and you’re sorted for pretty much anything Whistler will throw at you.
LZ down is suuuuuuuper warm!
For whistler or anywhere, you should be fine with a baselayer, 200 fleece and shell. The stagger is great but the 2012 is better than the 2013 (pow grips!). Anyways, if you’re cold just add another baselayer, or even a neck warmer will plug the neck hole in the jacket and keep you warmer
I originally started out with an insulated jacket but constantly overheated (even in Japan) Despite my jacket still being in good condition I replaced it this season with a Burton goretex shell which gives me a lot more flexibility when it comes to temperature management.
Unless you are cold blooded you will melt with those layers and those insulated jackets.
I would advise a high quality shell, as good a quality base layers as you can (I wear icebreaker merino wool) I have a couple of fleeces for my mid layers (don’t need to spend too much on these).
Hot tip is to make sure you have something to cover your face!
