Talk to me about SKINS (& equiv)

Avatar

So I have SKIN’s which I love and wear them every day on snow now.

Mainly for thermal properties and also the lactic acid prevention build up. I can really feel the difference (accidently left them at home one weekend - ouch!)

Anyway I really think I need a couple more pairs and really think I should get a pair prior to Japan… I really would not prefer to spend the dough right now so was thinking of getting one of the cheaper pairs.

Any thoughts??

I have both skins and 2XU branded compression tights and probably prefer the 2XU.

My advice is if you have time wait for the big sales the 2 companies always have on their websites. A couple of times I’ve picked up tights (standard compression and thermal compression) for less than $50 (compared to the $130+ they sell for in store)

You just missed a skins 80% off sale by a few days.

Edit: actually looks like it may still be running but I doubt there would be many sizes left http://store.skins.net/au/special-offers/au/skins-summer-sale.html/

Also worth checking out amazon as they often have 2XU for around $70ish delivered.

Okay so i just finalised my order….

But for the purpose of discussion. What is it about 2XU that you like so much? I have heard that as well.

I like the snow specific ones from Skins but may consider the 2XU ones for my boot camp class. (massive difference in my beep testing wearing them! My snow ones… LOL a bit hot in summer!)

My sister swears by Skins, although she hasn’t tried 2XU. I should mention Burton also makes a compression thermal.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

i use/have under armour
got them on sale (couple from japan outlet store while there couple from Wiggle UK)

i find the snow specific one actually too hot
the heat (summer) ones are actually quite good for australian conditions…hit and miss in Japan | wore it when it was blizzard conditions…..paid the price there LOL

anyway i never pay full price for them and notice skins is noticeably more expensive then any other brand

I have a pair of the burton Ak thermal skins and they are great, I just need a couple more pairs as it gets old washing them every couple of days.

I thought I’d read somewhere that compression underwear was proven to be of very minimal benefit.  I guess if you guys reckon they make a big difference then I might look at them again.  I’ve got some old Aldi pair in the drawer somewhere.

This year I’m starting to build up my stock of IceBreaker or similar superfine merino wool gear.  This seems to perform really well and doesn’t need to be washed much at all.  Only problem is the price, but you can get them at outlet stores and sales for about 30-50% off.

Mudhoney - I thought that too.

But last season really made it stand out - especially when I forgot them that one weekend.

Doing weekender trip (with lots of training and long days) I found that I needed to wear them on the drive home as well otherwise I was limping for days! I started doing the drive straight (ate dinner before leaving Jindy and starting with a full tank) not getting out to stretch after a day on the snow killed!

This also might be a good time to wear the none snow ones!

Ok thanks, Oz, might have to dig the Aldi specials out!  Some stuff here about whether it’s effective or not.  Seems to be iffy about whether it improves performance, but some evidence it at least improves recovery as you have said.  I guess that means you should pull them on immediately after coming in rather than having to wear them the whole time?

I know this is a bit weird - but how do you guys choose which size is right? Cos I’m assuming they are supposed to be quite tight and hence the compression…is that built into the sizes so you just get the size you’d normally get for boardies or whatever? Or do you choose a size down to get the compression? lol

Mudhoney - prevention is better than after the fact. So better to wear them all day (and therefore prevent the lactic acid build up) and I just wear them on the way down to Jindy and hold off having a shower for a bit, I find that is enough for the recovery part.

If I am driving home I just keep them on and shower when I get home to Sydney - sometimes that is 1am but I find having a shower when I get home helps me wind down and go to sleep.

Cords it is a bit like stockings for woman they have a chart kilos vs height and that’s how you pick you size.

Yeah I have to get back to the lodge we normally stay on the bus, and more recently have to also drop by the ski school and pick up the kids and walk or bus back with them.  Probably makes sense to keep them on all day.  There’s also lunchtime..

Yep I think it helps to wear them as much as possible. I know a dude who plays soccer professionally and he nearly always has his on (he often sleeps in them etc.)

Yep I have done that too!
