Supsie people,
Ok waterproofing spray question, who has used Nikwax spray (finney i think you have?) and who has used Toko spray.
There is a massive cost difference here in aus. like Toko is half the price of Nikwax (thats $15 in savings enough for couple of beers people!)
who used what? and what worked for who?

I’ve used nikwax a few times now with great results but can’t comment on toko. Nikwax also has wash through tech wash which you can also use before spraying the jacket/pants if they allow for it.
Now time for a rather late update as to whats been going on over the past 2 weeks as I’ve been a touch slack/absent from here with updates.
The Australia Day/Week period was pretty crazy, far too much drinking and one pub even imported a bunch of Coopers Pale Ale which was phenomenal.. however due to the excessive drinking I can’t remember the specifics, I just remember saying to a mate lets not repeat what happened yesterday - we started drinking at 12 on the mountain.. rest gets hazy and I know I did struggle at first putting my board on but once that was done I actually found I was riding a hell of a lot better switch hahaha. Unfortunately we repeated the previous days efforts and ended up drinking early on down at Dusty’s after a million dollar ridge lap. The drinking then continued somewhere in the village afterwards.. as I said, things were pretty hazy for this period.
Australia day had me on struggle street after getting home at the wonderful time of 8am from the night before - no I won’t go into specifics but basically there was a lot of drinks and hottest 100 playing at a house party. Was up the hill by 9:30 with Marc who has most of the photos which I still need to grab off him as I’m sure there are some good ones in there.
Australia day was pretty amazing as there were blue skies and fresh powder which was just perfect. After a few laps it was decided that we needed to stop for a drink, marc grabbed a bundy and I had some coopers which was great as it helped decimate the impending hangover which I managed to avoid somehow. Went back up the hill and did a few more laps through to last chair on Peak. Another coopers followed this once back in the village and then we shot home via the grocery store to grab some supplied for a bbq as Australia day isn’t complete without one. After food was cooked and then eaten I proceeded to crash out as I could barely keep my eyes open and had to work the following day.
next few days were as follows
***3 days of work***
***rest day as the body still needed a break***
And that brings us up to the last few days.
Tuesday saw some new snow but it wasn’t super deep and worthy of a detailed post.
Wednesday however was one of the best days of the season I’d have to say. 14cm of new snow on the report which meant even more up top in the alpine.
I’d initially written the day off as there are a few people in town that I know from home so I was expecting that i’d be riding with them but upon seeing the forecast I figured it was time to invoke the ‘no friends on a powder day’ rule.
Did my usual route up the hill and took Fitzsimmons and Garbanzo instead of the Village Gondola as you can always ride straight onto the chairs as compared to lining up at the Gondola. It was very cloudy and still snowing lightly in the village just after 8:30 and it was a very eery ride up as it looked like a scene out of silent hill with nobody on the snow covered chairs ascending the could covered hill ahead of me.
Although 15mins later at the top of Garbanzo i’d broken through the cloud and was greeted with the following view.
Dropped off a nearby cat track and was greeted with fresh powder through the trees and cut the first line through which instantly gave me a grin from ear to ear. Shot down to Red chair after this where there was next to no line up and then once at the top shot over to Ratfink and Marmot trees and once again got some pretty good lines down to sidewinder which took me back to Emerald where the line up was rather large with at least half of the maze full. Upon seeing this I dropped down to Red again via the trees off Whiskey Jack. By this stage the peak chair lineup was pretty significant so I rode down there to await the opening of peak which happened within minutes.
The First lap off Peak was without a doubt one of the best I’ve had in a long long time. Usually by the time I get to VD trees there are already a fair few lines through so I’ve never had a completely fresh line the whole way down but somehow this time using a new entry line from the top I finally got that fresh line. There were tracks leading in from one skier so I didn’t make it all the way for the high entry without having to unstrap and hike up. Once strapped back in I went for my entry to the trees and was astounded to see the skier just standing there not dropping in so I shot right past him and proceeded down into the trees where I found near bottomless powder with with Yes Tasman just floating on top the whole way down.
After this lap I was pretty blown away and was torn with what to hit next as I knew there was pretty much no way I’d top it. Just as I was loading onto Peak again I saw a mate just getting back down from a shale slope lap so once at the top I gave him a call and we decided that a Million Dollar Ridge lap was in order. This was where the no friends on a powder day rule was removed as whenever I’m going out of bounds I always like to have at least one other person with me just incase something goes wrong.
Snapped this photo of the snow covered inukshuk at the top of Peak whilst I was waiting for the others to arrive.
Once the others arrived at the top it was decided that a Khyber’s lap was in order. I hadn’t done Khybers since 2009 so I was more than up for this. The snow inside Khyber’s was amazing, knee deep pretty much everywhere and once in the trees there were natural hits and features everywhere - I’m tempted to call this the lap of the season just about as it was just perfect.
Photo of the drop in point of Khyber’s after the small hike up past the smoke shack.
Ended up at Creekside after Khyber’s and stopped in at Dusty’s for some food and beverages with this view back up the mountain.
After this break I shot into the village to meet up with some mates from Sydney who were leaving that afternoon to hang out for a bit.
once they were on their way I looked at the time amazed to find that I still had enough time to get the gondola back up and 1 more lap of Red in. Both were great, the snow was still great and the views just as breathtaking.
double post..
Great pics Finney! love those last two!
Cheers, they’re not too shabby given they’re from my shonky 3.2mp phone camera.
Yeah so no excuses as to why you can’t post pics to please us!! LOL
Awesome report finney
Oz day sounds like it was mega loose!
Stoked you are getting some good pow finally. Hope it keeps up till I get there. BTW would love to do Khybers and MDR with you if possible. I think I only did sections of MDR last time.
Also, what are your thoughts about a road trip to Revy? Still a possibility?
