Another thing, I’ve been skating since the early eighties (and worked for Australian Skateboarding magazine in the early noughties), and I don’t recall “switch” being used as a skating term until snowboarders started using it? Can anyone else shed some light on this?
*Sorry I missed the rest of this convo*
That’s cool Chucky, I didn’t know you worked for that mag! What did u do there?
I didn’t get to snowboard as a kid because I grew up on the coast, so u may be right about snowboarders starting it. But I think it wasn’t said in skating in the 80s cause we were on single kicks. When double kicks came in, that would be when people started using switch more commonly. But I couldn’t say for sure, I’m just guessing.
As far as the goofy thing goes though. We definitely still say goofy in snowboarding.
I’m goofy footed… So is Travis Rice… I’m just saying.
Yeah mate, some of the world’s best riders are goofy. Goofy’s probably one of the oldest bits of board sport terminology still in constant usage - it was around in the 1960’s, maybe even earlier!
I was Art Director of Australian Skateboarding and Australian Snowboarding magazines in the late nineties / early noughties, and I used to write for the snowboard mag as well. Hard work and shit pay, but some good perks at times. Your job’s better.
