Opening Weekend!

Out of interest, how much do snowboard instructors get paid in Oz? not after exact figure, just ball park…....I get the impression it is not the most “financially rewarding” jobs going around, but the fringe benefits probably make up for the lack of cash.

It’s pretty good compared to other resort jobs. When I worked at Thredbo in 2006, I was earning about $19 an hour. However I already had teaching experience and had a few certifications. The starting rate was lower, I believe new instructors were getting approx $15 an hour. The more experience you have the more you get paid - some older ski instructors were earning close to $30 an hour I believe.

Biggest problem with Perisher is that they have 2 time slots of 3 hours each. So they pay instructors max 6 hours a day and their Lift+Lesson = $50 more then Lift.

Thredbo have 3 lessons a day at 2.5 hour time slots. Therefore a max 7.5 hours a day to instruct people. Their Lift and Lesson is basically free for beginner skiers and boarders.

Therefore Thredbo gets a lot of new skiers and boarders actually doing lessons and less new skiers and boarders who go up with their “pro” mate that has being boarding once before on a school trip and has 3 days experience to teach them how to do it.

(Some people can do that but most can’t… my stupid athletic brother went for 2 days with me helping him and my sister out (we walked up the hill to avoid paying for a pass lol) and on his 3rd day, was pretty much keeping up with me going full ball down the mountain on green runs like Pleasant Valley. I had at least 40 days experience by then and could hit 30 foot kickers regularly.)

Wasn’t too bad to be honest.. Didn’t wait longer than a couple of minutes to get on either of the chairs and the slopes weren’t stupidly busy to be honest, basically just your usual day out on the snow in aus. Kind of felt like late april riding in whistler with the temp being up at 6 degrees and riding around with all vents open haha
