Washing gore-tex

Avatar

Ok so I’ve read the washing instructions on Gore-Tex website but still have a few questions.

1. Is it ok to wash it with warm water? My washing machine warm water option is broken so can’t use it.
2. It says on the site to follow the manufacturer instructions on the jacket. The online site says to tumble dry warm but the jacket’s label says not to tumble dry. Online site says it’s ok to dry clean, jacket says do not dry clean. So which to follow?

1. I think it’s fine to use warm water. Make sure all the detergent is fully disolved. Or just use Nikwax Tech Wash.

2. The Gore-Tex itself is meant to be tumble dried on low/warm. It actually revives the water repellency and breathability of the material. The manufacturer’s label might say not to as there might be something within the jacket which shouldn’t be tumble dried. Unlikely though. I’d still put it through a warm cycle for 20 or so minutes. There’s really not much you can do to it on a warm cycle. Take it out of the wash, let it drip dry for 10 minutes, then cycle it on warm/low until it’s dry.

You mean it’s fine to use cold water? Cause, my warm setting is broken

Cold or warm should be fine. The main thing to worry about is dissolving the detergent fully. If you want to make it a bit warm, you could always pour in a kettle of hot water.

So powder or liquid is fine?

Yeah but I’m guessing liquid is better if you have the choice. If you have powder, maybe dissolve it first in a bowl or warm water frist, then pour it in.

Thanks Jez! Just gonna use liquid then :D

Yeah, I’d go liquid and not over do it!!!!! Ya don’t wanna wash out the water repellin agent that’s in there!!!!!

There probably is somethin in the jacket that shouldn’t be tumble dried, but like Jez said, I’d still give it a go!!!!! As this will “Reset” the agent evenly through the jacket!!!!!

I would however dry it completely on a line (Drip Dry) before puttin it in the dryer, and also zip up any zips, and make sure all velcro is not exposed as this will shred stuff as it tumbles!!!!!

If you really want to do a complete job, spray this stuff on at the end:

Jacket’s only been used 9 times, but for some reason it smells which is why I want to wash it.

and I’m guessing using febreeze is a no-no?

spray it on the inside only?

I guess Febreze could work in getting the smell out? Yeah, just use on the inside if you do.

Do you dry your jacket out properly each time after you use it?

Mmm what do you consider as drying? It’s usually pretty dry, I just put it up on my rack with the hanger after use.

Using the Nikwax stuff to wash it out and waterproof it is good. They have a really good range of stuff to use.
