The GoPro camera has no waterproofing whatsoever, it meets no standard whether it be the Japan Industrial Standard (JIS) or International Protection (IP). It will fail if left out in humid conditions. The housing you can option to get it with cannot meet either of these standards as it is not an electrical device.
Vio meets IP67 waterproofing;
IP-International protection
6-No solid can enter, including dust.
7-Immersion (can be held below the surface of still water at a depth of one meter, for a period of 30 minutes, without water entering in harmful quantities).
The first number is on a scale of 1-6. Second number 1-8
Yes you can throw VIO into the water and be sure to use it afterwards. I have used it in the surf for well over 30 minutes without damage. The only time I’ve seen a vio damaged by water is when the owner overtightened then screws on the housing causing the seal to fail - I repaired that camera and it has continued to work fine.
Ya bang on there Tills!!!!!
I reckon that 99.9% of people do exactly what ya said, and that’s why the GoPro has slotted in its niche so well!!!!!
Having compared both raw vio and GoPro (notGP2) footage; vio POV1.5 is a great deal better than GoPro hero. VIO.HD blows all headcams away.
I’m not going to wast my money on buying a GP2 at full price to satisfy what I all ready know - consumers will not listen to professional advice instead they will follow what the masses do - sheeple.
It is impossible to get superior footage shooting through a 2 stage glass lens behind a plastic housing and upscaling the footage with inbuilt software compared to a 6 stage glass lens capturing in 1080p at the camera.
The GoPro’s housing is waterproof!!!!!
I have had it in water for over 2 hours, and the first time I did it without the anti fog pads in, it filled up with condensation yet the camera has never missed a beat!!!!!
I said what tills did 100 pages ago.
The humid conditions comment was sarcasm on my part.
What has been said a few times(not just by me); the DriftHD can be purchased for much less than GoPro and since 99% of owners don’t use these cams to their full potential and it has better looks, operation and performs equally is a much wiser purchase.
Still - anyone considering buying GoPoo should first consider the major camera manufacturers P&S tough lines.
Try this for $350
this thread is destroying my tiny sheeple brain
Tills said that he was goin GoPro!!!!!
And I don’t see any P&S sittin in the same catagory as the cams discussed in these pages!!!!!
Your undyin hatred for GoPro still amazes me!!!!!

Must eat more grass, must eat more grass….......
Hah this thread (and the driftHD one) just won’t die
In case anyone is interested, I’ll hopefully be able to provide some honest opinions (good or bad) and raw unedited footage (using the latest firmware) from a driftHD soonish.
I’m not expecting the footage to be as good as the GP2 footage we have seen but I hope with the improving firmwares that it reaches hd170 levels. I have no allegiance to either gopro or drift or vio it just came down to what feature set suited my needs best and what price I could get that feature set for. I still believe for what we all want to film any of these options will do a suitable job.
In this case I believe the driftHD is a better package for me but I accept at this stage I may be sacrificing some video quality (but will be more than good enough for my youtube/quick edit needs).
If it completely sucks and produces unwatchable video at least I’ll be able to give everyone else the heads up!
Just waiting for spaz to put an order in for me , I’ll keep you all updated.
Good stuff drc!!!!!
Can’t wait to see some of ya works!!!!!
The only time I’ve seen a vio damaged by water is when the owner overtightened then screws on the housing causing the seal to fail - I repaired that camera and it has continued to work fine.
To be honest spaz if this is my VIO you are talking about, the screws were not over tightened, I never touched the screws until AFTER the VIO failed, it was at that point I discovered the screws were UNDERTIGHTENED causing the seal to not… Well seal, resulting in water getting into the unit.
I’d still like it back a some point also. We gotta get that sorted ASAP! Until then I will continue to use my GP and will have to look into the GP2… My interest has been sparked!
Hmmmm…. interesting!!!!!
The GoPro IS waterproof I’ve seen a GoPro that someone lost in the sea and got back 2 months later, the case was badly damaged and not usable agian but the camera inside was fine (I’ll look up the video)
I also think that you, spaz, are somewhat influenced by an underlying hate towards GoPro!
has anyone tried this polarized lens for go pro? http://www.sportscamera.com.au/neutral-density-polarizer-filter-p-464.html
