New GoPro Hero 2

Avatar

Ok now we know that the Hero2 is better than the drift hd we still haven’t come to a conclusion on GoPro vs VIO

I need a conclusion! I want to film my next trip ^^

btw is it possible to buy poles for the Hero2 and/or the VIO? I think it gives a sweet camera point! And if so is there a big price difference and/or a difference in handling/handiness/weight/... ?

GoPro doesn’t have an inbuilt tripod mount - it’s an add on accessory.

Again; helmet strap “available” for GP - as are many options, but they are extra and depend on what kit you buy.

Yeah Warren I’ll try not to bust a ligament in my hand since you reverted to calling me a dick and posting with such negative intent.

But why would the battery go dead after two runs??? Didn’t you charge them??? Or were you too busy picking up all these chicks we here about???

They were the last set I had as all the others where out on hire or charging. I had my daughter for the weekend and believe being a responsible/caring dad is more important then professionalism.
(finding a snow bunny to snuggle up with is better than cuddling up to ya mate that smells of KFC)
wink

I even left meesages on your phone for the day i was meant to pick it up but couldn’t get in contact with you for three days…. Sounds professional…....

I attempted to call you. Thredbo is well known to have poor reception, the road from Sydney has many black spots.
Where the photographers at my booth and in HotShots, you spoke with, unhelpful? They past on the messages from you to me and found me when you where spotted at the cafe so I could hook you up. Effort was made to chase you guys from more than myself.

It was taped to a ski pole with duck tape and so was the connection to wire to camera!
And i wanted to pay you the full money for it but you said no?????? I just wanna say thanks spaz, cheers mate!

I gave you my personal camera since the other 8 where out with customers. With all the running around and stuff ups, I felt you deserved a good discount so you didn’t feel that I offered a substandard service.

I guess I failed….

drc13,
I’m much the same, I’m undecided about the gopro 2 or drift HD, leaning towards gopro though. I really like all the extra features and cool things about the drift but video footage of the previous drift 170 (or whatever it’s called) is barely up to scratch with the gopro 1 IMO. Plus I remember reading somewhere that the new drift is much the same in terms of video quality to their previous models. I can’t seem to find any real comparisons though between the gopro 2 and drift HD, or even any decent footage of the drift HD. Have you found much video footage of the drift HD??

Drift have had 4 models since 2006; X170 (standard definition), HD170, Stealth170, and DriftHD.

The Stealth and DriftHD are basically the same but the HD is 25% smaller/lighter and more expensive.
As with any camera putting a polarised filter on will correct the brightness problem (about $5) - you can’t correct the shadow issue of the GoPro.

Not sure if they are usin a 2, but this is a good example of the GoPro’s quality!!!!!

And if guys like this are choosin to use it, then it makes a great choice for the average punter!!!!!

Here’s a good video review of the new gopro vs the old one. Lots of video footage to compare the two.

There’s a part 1 and 2 to the review…

holy crap what a jump.  btw, did you see the silhouette of the cam on the pole?

Dan83: that’s a good review but it only shows that the hero 2 is way better then the hero (1)

and that is a sick jump!

After seeing some snowboarding video’s of the VIO and the Hero 2 I think the VIO gives better quality but looks harder to attach .

So as far as my choice goes it is choosing between price/quality and handiness

Price: GoPro is way cheaper
Quality: the VIO POV HD gives way better video
and then there is the handiness:

GoPro:
it has easy mounts that attach to everything
can be used to surf aka super waterproof
mounts look like sh*t(srry for language) , not fancy in any way!

VIO POV HD
also has a ton of mounts
but it has the cable and the ‘block’ witch don’t contribute to the handiness
It does look waaaay better then the GoPro
It can’t be used to surf because it’s not fully waterproof
can be attached to sunglasses?(I remember spaz saying that?)
has the handy LCD screen and the remote!

I think his pretty much sums it up
Now I just need to make a decision ^^

Yeah, both the shadow and then the clicking noise when they go to turn the camera off!!!!!

VIO is fully waterproof by world industry standards.

Mizu, How do you know those guys “chose” to use GoPro? Any-case me thinks they are professional snowboarders not professional photographers.

It is a leading choice for the average punter. If by punter you mean a person that is easily influenced by popular media and marketing so that the players can profit from simple mindedness - akin to the type of person that believes what is said in snow reports released by Australian resorts to sell lift tickets on bad weather days.

I like to keep people informed by not pulling the wool over their eyes.

GoPro is not a professional camera, neither is Drift. Both are used by professional athletes and the sales reflect that.
VIO is used by professional photographers as a lower grade choice when their better gear can’t do a particular job. It is also used by US security forces. VIO do not chase publicity as much as other companies and have relied largely on the product to sell itself.

If GoPro paid for these guys to use their product wouldn’t they wanna see some sort of endorsment?????

No wool over my eyes!!!!! GoPro sells more cameras than VIO, because GoPro is a better camera all round!!!!!

You can have your marginally better picture quality, and I’ll have the rest of the great attributes of the GoPro any day of the week!!!!!

Avatar

I have to agree with Mizu. At most I would say the VIO has marginally better video quality than the gopro, and I’m really just saying that based on Spaz’s advice not from any footage I’ve seen to prove it. Whether it’s equal or better than the gopro 2??? I don’t know (I would put my money on the gopro). For sure the the gopro 2 looks significantly better than the gopro Hero HD.

IMO At the end of the day, the video quality looks pretty similar between the VIO and gopros, regardless of other pros and cons for the units, the price heavily tips the scales in favour of the gopro 2. I thought the Drift HD might offer some competition with it’s cool features and equal price to the gopro, but from everything I’ve seen, the video quality just doesn’t cut it. Gopro it is for me cool grin

So I can throw a VIO into the water and be sure I can use it afterwards?

GoPro does have a huge commercial campaign(freaking commercials everywhere) and yes it works, it’s called marketing and if the product would suck even massive marketing couldn’t sell it but it does now so no the GoPro isn’t as ‘pro’ as the name says but it does do the job.

And what would you do? You get massive marketing in ya face from GoPro and you want a camera. Since the GoPro is the only one that people know it is the obvious choice for the ‘normal’ people. Of course for people who work with camera’s all day and know that there are better camera’s it’s a pain in the ass that people use hardware that is not the best.

I study ICT and spend a lot of time behind my computer(maybe too much ^^) and I also hate it to see people running around with laptops and cellphones that are not the best even while the price is almost the same.

oh and Mizu what are those ‘great attributes’ you are talking about??

At the end of the day, how many people would be using these to their full potential anyway? I’d hazard a guess that a vast majority of the people who buy GoPro, DriftHD or whatever are only really uploading to their PC or Youtube anyway. Maybe doing a quick edit and throwing it on a DVD for some friends to have a geez at.

If that’s the case, is it really worth worrying about the subtle (or not so subtle, depending on who you ask) differences anyway?

I’m thinking about getting a GoPro for Christmas. And I have to admit that I haven’t even bothered comparing cameras. I guess I just though of GoPro because they’re out there. Pretty common. That, and I know a few people who have them, and I guess there’s always a chance of sharing mounts etc?

Avatar

Ease of use, compatability with any sport/activity (the camera that I used for my WSD Comp edit), availability of mounts, real waterproof housing comes as a standard, great batteries, easy file transfer, fits in ya pocket, lots of dealers with every replacement part available….......

And if we were completly honest here, if we were goin to go into professional film makin, then we wouldn’t be lookin at any of these cameras, VIO included!!!!!

Do yaself a favour, and jump over into the GoPro paddock as the grass is definitely greener!!!!! BAA BAA BAAAAAA!!!!!
