this just sealed the deal for me.. Hero 2 is being ordered once I’m in Whistler
Yeah I watched that the other day, the hero 2 no doubt looks better than the hero 1 and I think it’s hard to go wrong with that purchase. I’m still interested to see a hero2 vs drifthd quality comparison though just like the video you linked but with those 2 cameras. I still like the idea of the lcd screen, remote control and lower profile design of the drifthd but if it turns out the picture quality sucks compared to the hero2 then obviously those advantages are discounted.
Yeah I wanna see that too. The main drawback with the Drift is that its not waterproof. yeah I know you can get the case, but that’s a hassle and the gopro is waterproof out of the box. On the other hand, the fog filters for the gopro sound like a hassle. I think the image quality comparison will be the decider.
The anti fog inserts are no hassle whatsoever!!!!! They’re as easy as insertin a card into the camera!!!!!
And if you have the Drift with the waterproof housing, you’ll most likely find that it will also need some kind of anti fog control also!!!!!
didn’t you say something about roasting them in the oven or something? That kinda sounds like a hassle.
I only did that once, to one pair, just to see how they went, but even then it was only a matter of chuckin the oven on at 150 and puttin them on a tray for 10-15mins!!!!!
They say to do this so as to make them reusable!!!!!
Like I said, I think that you might run into the same problem with any cam that has a waterproof housing anyway?????
ah right, so you don’t have to cook em to “dry them out” each time you use? that’s not so bad I guess.
I’m in no hurry so I’ll wait for a bit for prices to settle and a few more reviews to come in.
closest thing to a comparison i’ve seen so far

That’s right, plus ya get 3 sets of them in the pack!!!!!
the guy who posted that video has been posting some other helpful stuff in the youtube comments section
Good find mudhoney, was kind of hoping the drifthd put up more of a fight. I have read stuff about the first firmware being pretty shoddy I wonder if he’s updated to the latest version (I could be talking out of my ass though I’ve read a bunch of stuff from different sources)

Maybe post a comment on that youtube page and see if he responds. I also read a Gizmodo article about having some problems with the Drift that may have been firmware related.
Don’t forget that you’ll need to purchase a memory card for either of these camera’s. And not a cheap card.
At least a class 6.
For GP2 burst photo’s - class 10.
If you buy the wrong card you’ll likely find it doesn’t do the job and need to make a second purchase.
4gb cards (class6) are around $25 and hold about 30min of 1080p footage.
A 32gb class 10 is very pricey.
I have 4gb class6 SD cards for BWM@$16. PM me.
You can run an LCD Screen BacPac on the GoPro, and remotely operate the camera from your smartphone!!!!!
No you can’t!!!!!
The firmware hasn’t been developed yet. Wifi, steaming and remote operation ability is there with no way to use it.
It is due for release “sometime” during NoHe winter. My experience with all headcam manufacturers is that these things happen usually about 6 months after they’re expected release. They get the sale now (because of promises), but by the time they deliver a better product has been put out by themselves or another company.
With so many of you talking about video quality why are you considering either GoPro or Drift?
Unless the biggest consideration is which one of these (comparatively) is better than the other. Neither of these offer the “best” quality in the headcam market.
If you want the best video quality you have to pay more than $400.
Buying GoPro, Drift, contour (or any cam in that price range) will cost more than the sale price for what you’ll need to produce good footage.
At $400 you are buying a consumer item - not a professional camera. Even if these consumer products include pro functions I doubt 5% of owners will ever utilise them.

GoPro Wi-Fi remote BacPac, can be used on either HD Hero or Hero 2!!!!!! But only Hero 2 can be operated via smartphone etc, but both can still stream to another device!!!!!
Wi-Fi-enable your HD HERO2 or original HD HERO camera with the Wi-Fi BacPac™ and Wi-Fi Remote.
The Wi-Fi BacPac attaches to your HD HERO2 camera to enable long range video remote control via the Wi-Fi Remote or a smartphone, tablet, or computer running a free GoPro App. Waterproof and durable, the Wi-Fi Remote enables complete control of up to 50 HD HERO2 cameras at a time.
When paired with the Wi-Fi BacPac, the HD HERO2 also supports live video streaming and remote control via smart-devices, computers and the Web wherever Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot is present. Record one video stream to your HD HERO2?s SD card while sending a second video stream via Wi-Fi to your smart-device, computer or the Web.
The original HD HERO is also compatible with the Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote with support for remote control functions only. Video streaming is not available on the original HD HERO camera.
Personally I’m not expecting broadcast quality footage or pro functions in this price bracket.
But I do think it’s worthwhile comparing features/quality of similarly priced products i.e the gopro/drift/contour ranges.
Obviously it’s a compromise whichever option you choose but I’d like to feel I make an informed decision based on the information available.
An example of this was if I hadn’t researched at all I never would have known the drift even existed and I may have bought a contour because it looked the most sleek IMO.
But post research I’ve narrowed it down to the features/quality I’m after in the price bracket which narrowed it down to the driftHD and Gopro2.
Your generous pricing offer has obviously made me lean strongly in one direction but until the time comes to purchase I’m all for becoming better informed.
Yep, the right information is is very important, especially when marketing can be so misleading. It doesn’t help that 90% of reviews are lifted directly from GoPro’s press release.
Mizu, you seem to have missed copy&pasting; the availability date:
Wi-Fi BacPac™ + Wi-Fi Remote Combo Kit
Model Number: AWIFI-001
Available February, 2012
And what will this piece of kit cost? Can it be used with the/a waterproof housing?
The lcd bacpac - $125
Anti fog inserts - $22
Spare battery - $39
SD card - $15-$200
The wifi bacpac&remote; will be well above $125
Suddenly a GP2 is going to cost +$600 compared to VIO $649
