The Southern Hemisphere's first surfable artificial wave is set to open in Melbourne next year, following the announcement that URBNSURF has had construction approved on a 7-hectare piece of land in Tullamarine, 25 minutes from the city CBD.
Set to be twice the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the facility will utilise Wavegarden technology to create waves ranging from 1.9m high down to 0.6m high, and will include rolling white-water waves for beginner surfers. Each wave will run for approximately 32 seconds.
URBNSURF claims that the wave pool will "unlock the sport of surfing geographically", and we're definitely keen to see the results. Watch the teaser video above and let us know your thoughts.
